Nvidia Control Panel/Inspector shenanigans

Apparantly in 2019 someone discovered a bug that could be triggered with certain nvidia profile settings that would reduce the amount of vegetation and texture resolution to make players easier to see. Instead of fixing the bug DICE banned the players and implemented a protection scheme.

This protection scheme is outrageous. On startup, the game will look for your nvidia control panel settings file, open it and find its own entry, then revert all settings to default. It will also look for any other profiles that target its executable, and delete them outright. From your own settings in another app. This is essentially malware behaviour. You cannot use any special settings for battlefield 5. If you have global settings that you don't want to apply to battlefield 5 you can't undo them for that specific profile only, but must adjust your global settings.

The protection can be worked around by setting the file to read only, or restricting write access to administrators, but both of these will break the control panel and the second one will only allow inspector access.

The most effective workaround is to use the new Windows 10 ransomware protection. (Or running uninstall.exe and getting a refund, my preferred solution.) Unfortunately it protects the entire user folder and you will need to allow many, many, apps to protect one file from one malicious program.

The file is %programdata%\Nvidia Corporation\Drs\nvdrsdb0.bin and nvdrsdb1.bin
