Issues fixed

Run on Windows 8 and later

Solitaire and other bundled games are unavailable after upgrading to Windows 8.
The steps below make the Windows 7 version run on Windows 8 (there is no fix for the Vista version yet).
Disable windows version check[citation needed]
  1. Recover the Solitaire files.
    • If you did an upgrade install: look in C:\windows.old\Program Files\Microsoft Games\
    • If you did a clean install: go to sources on the Windows 7 DVD and open install.wim using 7-Zip.
  2. Copy the recovered Solitaire folder somewhere convenient.
  3. Recover cardgames.dll file.
    • For upgrade install look from C:\windows.old\Windows\System32\ and for clean open install.wim by same method as in last step.
  4. Open Solitaire.exe with a hex editor such as HxD.
    • If Windows 7 was 64-bit:
      1. Search for the hex values 3b c6 0f 4c ce 3b
      2. Change to 39 c0 0f 4c ce 3b
  5. Move the Solitaire folder to its default location (it will only work with this location):
    • If Windows 7 was 64-bit: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games
    • If Windows 7 was 32-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games
  6. Move cardgames.dll inside the solitaire folder next to Solitaire.exe.
  7. Solitaire will now run on Windows 8 and later.
