Issues And Fixes

Secondary Installers

If you're encountering issues with launching Civilization V, make sure everything installed smoothly.

Aside from verifying your game cache and checking your connection with Steam, you may also need to manually run secondary installers required by this game.

Exit Steam entirely.

Browse to your Civilization V installation folder

C:\Program files\Steam\Steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v\

Run the following installers:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\VCRedist\vcredist_x86.exe C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\DirectX\DXSetup.exe

Reboot your computer and test any issues again.

If you continue to have difficulty, and you are running Windows Vista or 7, please also run the following installer (if you are using Window XP you may skip this step):

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\Common\sid meier's civilization v\DirectX\D3D11Install.exe

Reboot once more and test the issue again.

Issues with Version 1.0.1.674

On June 14, 2012, an update was released to Civilization V that added a number of new features, as well as some new problems with the game.

Saved games created before the patch may no longer work, or have randomized civilizations. Starting a new game is recommended.

Some people have complained that loading saved games, whether saved before or after the patch, causes massive unhappiness to occur in the game, even if the population was happy before saving.

There is a bug which causes the game to freeze up and crash, in both DX9 and DX11 modes when opening the Load Game screen at any point during the game.

There is a bug in which some people are unable to select units, give orders, or end turns. This can be resolved in some cases by lowering the graphics settings. Another method is to edit config.ini in My Documents/My Games/Civilization V/ (Windows) and change EnableGameCoreThreading = 1 to EnableGameCoreThreading = 0. This method allows the game to run without changing the graphics settings. It also may help with random crashes/start up crashes since the new patch.

If the path to the saved games folder contains any non-English characters, saved games may cause Civilization V to crash after the patch. Moving the My Documents folder seems to fix this.

Some users report problems getting the game to load, instead getting a black screen, then a crash. Deleting the video files allows the game to load (but obviously removes the videos from the game).

In some cases, moving the cursor to the edge of the screen after ending a turn causes the game to autoscroll in that direction until the next turn begins.

Some people have had DLC disappear after the patch. If this happens, first run the game and open the new DLC menu and make sure the DLC is enabled. If this doesn't work or the DLC is not listed, try verifying the game cache.

Some people are having problems getting mods to download from Steam Workshop. If this happens, try deleting Civ5ModsDatabase.db from My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5.

Some people have reported that Steam Workshop does not work, and selecting the Mods menu displays "Single Player" instead.

OS Specific Troubleshooting

If the above does not resolve the issue and you are running Windows 7 or Windows Vista, please complete the instructions in Steam's Windows 7 and Windows Vista Troubleshooting FAQ.

If you are running in Windows XP, take the following steps:

  1. Exit Steam.
  2. Go to the "Start" menu, select "Run", type "regedit" and click "OK".
  3. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\VALVE
  4. Right click and select "Permissions"
  5. Check the "Allow" boxes for "Admin" and "System" for both "Full control" and "Read".

Disabling the Starting Cinematic

A lot of people find this annoying. This tweak will not shorten the time the game launches in, as the game will show you a black screen for the small while that the cut scene would have been in.

Locate Usersettings.ini and find SkipIntroVideo = 0 then change 0 to 1.

Windows:

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization V\

Mac OSX:

/Documents/Aspyr/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/

You can also delete the Civ5_Opening_Movie_en_** on your game folder or replace it with other video you please.

The latest patch for Civilization V included an option to disable the opening cinematic, as well as adds loading screens instead of a blank screen. The usersettings.ini tweak is no longer necessary.

Problems Downloading DLC

Occasionally, when you buy DLC from Steam, you will not find it available in your game. The exact cause of this is unknown. The most effective way to fix this error would be to verify the game cache files, but you may find this doesn't work / crashes Steam. When this happens, you can fix it by uninstalling and re-installing Civilization V through Steam. Additional problems uninstalling or re-installing are Steam-related.

Game Screen Too Big For Monitor

Sometimes after installing the game, the game resolution will be larger than the screen and parts of the game will be cut off. To fix this, go into option and change the game resolution. If you are unable to access the options, manually edit GraphicsSettingsDX9.ini or GraphicsSettingsDX11.ini (depending on which DirectX mode you use) in \My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\ to the correct resolution (1024x768 Minimum).

Unable to Run DirectX 11

If Steam doesn't highlight the option to run DirectX 10 & 11 on the game launcher, stating it requires Service Pack 2 or above, the solution is:

1. Quit out of Steam.

2. Right-click on the Steam.exe application (found in the Steam installation folder) and select "Properties", then select the "Compatibility" tab.

3. At the bottom of this tab is a button called "Change Settings for All Users". Click it.

4. Change the compatibility mode to AT LEAST "Windows Vista Service Pack 2".

5. Relaunch Steam.

This should correct this particular problem for you. When you install steam on 64-bit system, or on a different drive than "C", Steam will sometimes relegate itself to "Compatibility Mode" which can cause bad things to happen.
