Key points

Frame rate is capped at 30 FPS.
Poor keyboard controls and no mouse support; a controller is highly recommended.
Based on the low quality PlayStation 2 port rather than the superior GameCube version.[1]

Essential improvements

Patches

The game originally shipped with heavily downgraded visuals compared to the console versions. Patch 1.1 drastically enhances graphics, lighting and VFXs, and also fixes crashes which would occur when trying to skip certain cutscenes.

Mods

Enhanced Environment

Cerberus84 from Mod DB has made texture pack which improves upon the default textures included with the game and can be downloaded from modDB.

ENBSeries

The lighting/graphical patch greatly improves how the game looks.
May decrease performance.

Resident Evil 4 MouseAim Patch

Adds Mouse Aim.

SetupTool.ini[2]
  1. Go to the installation folder.
  2. Edit SetupTool.ini.
  3. Edit SizeX and SizeY lines to set your desired resolution.
  4. Set Type=0 to set the game to widescreen mode.

Remapping

Gamepad and keyboard configuration settings can be found in SetupTool.ini. The mouse cannot be used in-game.
For Xbox 360 controllers / Wireless controllers for Windows, it is possible to use the triggers to ready the knife or weapon instead of LB (no. 5) and RB (no. 6).
Xbox controller trigger remapping[citation needed]
  1. Open SetupTool.ini.
  2. Using the first table below, locate and modify the lines to link the Z-axis (az+ for LT, az- for RT) to where ReadyKnife and ReadyWeapon appear in the .ini.
  3. Do the same for the ReadyKnife and ReadyWeapon variables in the second table.
These functions can allocate only a digital button.
Action=1
Run=2
Map=8
ReadyKnife=az+
ReadyWeapon=az-
Do the same for this section only for ReadyKnife and ReadyWeapon variables too; nothing else. "Foward" is not a typo. Ensure the original file contains this spelling mistake.
===== Used by SetupTool =====

[PAD0]

PadName=Microsoft:XBOX 360 For Windows (Controller)
Foward=ay-
Back=ay+
LeftTurn=ax-
RightTurn=ax+
CameraUp=ry-
CameraDown=ry+
CameraLeft=rx-
CameraRight=rx+
Action=3
Run=1
Map=8
ReadyKnife=az+
ReadyWeapon=az-
The new remappings must be modified manually since SetupTool.exe will show [ NONE ] for the trigger remapping, and left LB (5) and RB (6) available to whatever action function the player desires.
If you want to use LB & RB, assign their numbers to an only action manually in the .ini file, not using SetupTool.exe.
