OpenLoco is an open-source re-implementation of Chris Sawyer's Locomotion. It implements various fixes, additions, improvements, raised limits and optimizations compared to the original game, while remaining faithful to the original.[1] Most significant changes include high resolution support, restored windowed mode, custom plugin system, cheats which allow the player to ignore constraints of the game (such as disabling breakdowns and AI players), vehicle cloning, periodic auto-saving, and more.

The code is not yet independent from that of the original game as of June 2023, and it requires a full installation of Locomotion for audio and visual assets, as it does not have a free alternative of its own. Updates are usually distributed on a monthly basis. multiplayer has not yet been implemented.
