There is currently no ongoing official support for FreeSpace 2. However, FreeSpace 2's code base was released as FreeSpace 2 Source Code Project and is actively worked on by the community.
FreeSpace 2 is the sequel to Descent: FreeSpace – The Great War (1998).
Patches
The latest community patch can be downloaded from here. It is a major update of the whole game engine and among other things greatly improves graphics.
Mods
The aforementioned community patch is essential for user made modifications and includes a mod loader. It even allows importing the prequel's campaign and playing it with the community patch.
