Skip intro videos

Instructions[citation needed]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>.
  2. From there navigate to: Languages/Movies/English

Patches

Patch v1.4 (32-bit only) - The latest patch available for the game
64-bit Upgrade Patch - Upgrades the game to take advantage of 64-bit architectures, allowing for higher frame rates and other optimizations.
64-bit Enhanced Content Patch - Adds exclusive features such as higher resolution textures and objects as well as increased viewing distances in some cases.

Notes

After applying the 64-bit Enhanced Content Patch, the mountain rock textures appear extremely blurry in-game.
Steam Instructions[citation needed]
The Steam version needs some additional steps for these patches to work.
  1. Go to <path-to-game>.
  2. Rename Bin32 to something else.
  3. Rename Bin64 to Bin32

SilentPatch

Fixes the water reflections for landmasses not working on Vista and newer systems
Fixes the in-game Vsync option and common crashes
Implements the -64bit command line argument to launch 64-bit version directly from Steam

Multi-monitor

Changing the resolution using console[4]
  1. Once in-game press ~.
  2. Type \r_width 1440 (width of resolution).
  3. Type \r_height 900 (height of resolution).
Alternative - Changing the resolution by editing system.cfg[citation needed]
  1. Go to the installation folder.
  2. Edit system.cfg with a text editor.
  3. Set r_Width = and r_Height = to the desired resolution.

Notes

Use this method, if the game doesn't save resolution you've entered using console.

Field of view (FOV)

Be aware that FC servers can override the FOV setting to prevent cheating. It is possible to create a server which does not override the FOV.
Change FOV using console and developer mode[4]
  1. Run Far Cry in Developer Mode using the -devmode command line argument.
  2. When in-game, open a console by pressing ~.
  3. Type in \fov XXX (where XXX is your horizontal FOV value, eg. \fov 105).

Notes

You won't be able to join any servers while in developer mode.
Zooming in with your weapon resets the custom FOV.
Permanently changing the FOV by editing files[4]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>\FCData
  2. Make a backup copy of SCRIPTS.pak.
  3. Rename SCRIPTS.pak to SCRIPTS.pak.zip.
  4. Open SCRIPTS.pak.zip and navigate to the SCRIPTS\Default\Hud folder within the zip file.
  5. Extract ZoomView.lua and open it in Notepad.
  6. Find NoZoom = 90 * 3.1415962 / 180.
  7. Change 90 to the desired FOV value.
  8. Save your changes to ZoomView.lua.
    • If you can't save ZoomView.lua after editing, right click, go to properties and make sure, it's not set to Read Only.
  9. Now overwrite the original ZoomView.lua with your modified version in SCRIPTS.pak.zip
  10. Rename SCRIPTS.pak.zip back to its original name SCRIPTS.pak.

Notes

You need to zoom in once with your weapon at the start of each level for FOV changes to take effect.
This FOV hack will work fine for LAN games.

Borderless fullscreen windowed

Force borderless fullscreen[citation needed]
  1. Download and run DxWnd.
  2. Click on Edit, then Add.
  3. Set the Path to <path-to-game>\Bin32\FarCry.exe.
  4. Set Desktop for borderless fullscreen windowed.
  5. Click on DirectX tab, set DirectX 9.
  6. Click OK, then File and Save.

Issues fixed

Game crashes with very high lighting

When setting the Lighting Quality option in-game to Very High you may experience a crash/freeze every time you launch the game. This is easily resolved:
Instructions[citation needed]
  1. Go to the installation folder.
  2. Open system.cfg with your text editor of choice.
  3. Modify the parameter r_ShadersPrecache to 0
  4. Launch the game and set the Lighting Quality option to Very High.

Notes

Alternatively you can just set the option to a maximum of High instead of Very High to resolve the issue.

Broken water reflections

Reflections on water are broken by default in Windows Vista and higher. Foliage and other objects are reflected, but landmasses are missing altogether.[5][6]
Install SilentPatch[3]

  4. Save the file and launch the game.

System requirements

Windows ME, while it can work with Far Cry, is not supported.
Windows
Minimum Recommended
Operating system (OS) 98SE
Processor (CPU) AMD Athlon 1.0 GHz
Intel Pentium III 1.0 GHz
System memory (RAM) 256 MB
Hard disk drive (HDD) 4 GB
Video card (GPU) 64 MB of VRAM
DirectX 9.0b compatible

Notes

  1. SafeDisc retail DRM does not work on Windows 10[1] or Windows 11 and is disabled by default on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 when the KB3086255 update is installed.[2]
  2. 2.0 2.1 When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  3. 3.0 3.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/13520/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (13520) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
