Essential improvements

Text chat support

Install text chat mod
Only other people who use this mod will be able to see the chat. Support is growing though and global chat is quite active already.
  1. Download and install instructions: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout76/mods/151

Skip intro videos

Modify Fallout76Custom.ini
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open Fallout76Custom.ini or create it if it does not exist.
  3. Add or modify the following lines under [General]:
sIntroSequence=
uMainMenuDelayBeforeAllowSkip=0

Game data

Field of view (FOV)

An in-game FOV slider was added in an update and fDefaultWorldFOV edits are no longer necessary.[4]
In-game slider changes world FOV only, viewmodel (1st person weapon) FOV can still be set via ini entry:
Change View-model FOV via Fallout76Custom.ini
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open Fallout76Custom.ini or create it if it does not exist.
  3. Under [Display] add or modify the following parameters to desired FOV:
fDefault1stPersonFOV=XX

Notes

Modifying fDefault1stPersonFOV will also modify the PipBoy's field of view. Fallout 76 features an optional Power Armor style menu that is less affected by this however, accessible via right clicking twice in the Pipboy menu.

Vertical sync (Vsync)

Modify Fallout76Prefs.ini
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open Fallout76Prefs.ini.
  3. Under [Display] change iPresentInterval to 0.

Notes

Disabling vertical sync will unlock framerate from 60 FPS.
Animation speedup issues that normally arise above 60 FPS appear to have been corrected, but further testing is needed.

Disable Depth of Field

An in-game DoF slider was added in an update[4] and the below changes may no longer be necessary or partially necessary.
Modify Fallout76Custom.ini
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open Fallout76Custom.ini or create it if it does not exist.
  3. Add the following lines under [Display] to disable long distance terrain DOF
fDOFBlendRatio=0
fDOFMinFocalCoefDist=999999
fDOFMaxFocalCoefDist=99999999
fDOFDynamicFarRange=99999999
fDOFCenterWeightInt=0
fDOFFarDistance=99999999
  1. Add the following lines under [ImageSpace] to disable dynamic short distance DOF
bDynamicDepthOfField=0

Notes

Some of these commands are new to the engine and require additional testing of their exact effects.

Disable Motion Blur

Modify Fallout76Prefs.ini
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open Fallout76Prefs.ini.
  3. Find the following line under [ImageSpace], and set it to this value.
bMBEnable=0

Vertical sensitivity

Modify Fallout76Custom.ini
  1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
  2. Open Fallout76Custom.ini or create it if it does not exist.
  3. Add or modify the following lines under [Controls]:
fMouseHeadingXScale = 0.021
fMouseHeadingYScale = XX
  1. Where XX replace with:
  • .03738 for 16:9 resolutions
  • .042 for 21:9 resolutions
  • .028 for 4:3 resolutions
  • .0336 for 16:10 resolutions

Notes

Issues fixed

Game freezes when trying to exit

This bug appears to only occur when using fullscreen mode; windowed mode is not affected.
Use SuperF4 to kill the game process.
  1. Download SuperF4.
  2. Make sure SuperF4 is running before you start the game.
  3. After clicking "Exit to desktop" in-game, press CTRL+ALT+F4 to kill the game.

SLI system stutters constantly

It appears SLI does not work properly on some systems, using 100% of GPU1 and practically 0 of GPU2, but causes severe fps stutter.
Disable SLI
  1. Rightclick your desktop > Nvidia Control Panel
  2. Go to "Configure SLI, Surround, PhysX" on the left
  3. Check "Disable SLI" and then apply
Don't forget to re-enable SLI if you're going to play something else!

Icons don't show up in the Atomic Shop

Restore the Fallout76Custom.ini beginning
This is caused by mods interferring with how the stock files are loaded.[5]
  1. Open your Fallout76Custom.ini file in a text editor. %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Fallout 76\Fallout76Custom.ini)
  2. Modify the beginning of the sResourceArchive2List line in the Archive section to read as follows:

SeventySix - 00UpdateMain.ba2, SeventySix - 01UpdateMain.ba2, SeventySix - 00UpdateStream.ba2, SeventySix - 01UpdateStream.ba2, SeventySix - 00UpdateTextures.ba2, SeventySix - 01UpdateTextures.ba2, SeventySix - MeshesExtra.ba2, SeventySix - GeneratedMeshes.ba2,

Notes

  1. Follow list is for the issues still persisting / features missing. Make sure to update this, with each patch!
    • [citation needed] Reports indicate poor optimization
    • When played in ultra-widescreen, some UI elements might end up offscreen
    • [1] Lack of option to disable mouse smoothing
    • Lack of text chat
    • Limited keyboard rebinding options and overall unintuitive controls (i.e. ESC opens a map)
