Windows

Availability

Template:Availability Table

GOG.com version of the game runs the best on modern operating systems.
Most versions of Fallout are censored where models of children have been replaced by adults.[1]
Instructions

Fallout Revived

This is a pirated version of the game which also includes the Unofficial 1.3.5 patch and the High Resolution Patch.

Improvements

Three recommended patches make the game workable on modern operating systems.

Semi-Official 1.2 Patch

Template:Star Created by TeamX.

This patch is in addition to the standard version 1.2 on most rereleases of the game (GOG.com, Steam, White Label).

Unofficial 1.3.5 Patch

Template:Star Created by TeamX.

Semi-Official 1.2 Patch is required as a prerequisite.
Combined with Semi-Official 1.2 Patch, these patches fix virtually all bugs.

Fallout1 High Resolution Patch v3.0.6

Template:Star Created by "Mash" Matt Wells.

Forum thread and Wiki page providing more information.
Allows one to choose widescreen resolutions.
Screenshots appear as black screens.

Sfall

Template:Star Developed by Timeslip.

There is some confusion about Sfall for Fallout. No version of Sfall works or has been developed for Fallout, only for Fallout 2.
Timeslip has stated: "There has never been a fallout 1 version of sfall. The mod that was available that shared the same name was not sfall in the fallout 2 sense, but mostly just a glorified fix for the black screen issues. This can now be accomplished more easily, and with less restrictions on which version of the fallout exe you need to use, with the resolution patch."[2]

Issues And Fixes

Crashes

The CD version of the game reports an error upon start-up if run on Windows NT, or any OS based on Windows NT, like 2000, XP, Vista, 7, etc. This can be fixed by running the installer in compatibility mode for Windows 95.

Graphical Tweaks

Support for higher resolutions/widecreen

Support for Widescreen and higher resolutions can be added with the High Resolution Patch, it is suggested you patch the game first, however.(See above)

Color fix for Steam/CD versions

The Steam version and the CD version are known for having strange colors on modern OS's. This can be fixed by killing explorer.exe before starting fallout, and applying all the relevant patches.

Performance Improvements

Most of the performance issues can be fixed by patching the game. (See above)

Alternatively you can try renaming the "ddraw.dll" inside the game's folder.

Mods And Utilities

Timeslips Fallout Engine Tweaks

Timeslip's Fallout Engine Tweaks, add misc features, like support for windowed mode, and the ability to use a scrollwheel in the inventory.

Save Game Data

Save Game Folder Location

Save games can be found in the following folder for all Operating Systems:

GAMEFOLDER\data\SAVEGAME\SlotXX

Where "GAMEFOLDER" is the folder you installed the game in, and "SlotXX" is the number of the save game you want to get.

Transfer Save Game

Transferring save games is as easy as copying them over. The same save games work for PC/Mac/DOS.
