Version Differences
The European versions of the game have children removed, which can be fixed with Children Patch. The American CD and GOG.com/Steam versions all include children.
Patches
Official
The official 1.1 patch can be found for Windows, Mac, and Linux Here, which fixes several minor changes, but is not required for the other patches.
Unofficial
The Semi-Official 1.2 patch can be found Here. It can be installed to any version of Fallout, 1.0, 1.0, or 1.2. It is required to install the Unofficial 1.3.5 Patch. When used together, they fix most of the bugs in the game. There's also Timeslip's Fallout Engine Tweaks, which add misc features, like support for windowed mode, and the ability to use a scrollwheel in the inventory.

Support for Widescreen and higher resolutions can be added with the High Resolution Patch, it is suggested you patch the game first, however.(See above)
Color fix for Steam/CD versions
The Steam version and the CD version are known for having strange colors on modern OS's. This can be fixed by killing explorer.exe before starting fallout, and applying all the relevant patches.
