+ | Try opening Windows' Device Manager and disabling your audio-device (in my case Realtek HD audio was the culprit). If this allows the game to run, then this fix might work for you. Remove the device, and download a driver from the audio-device manufacturer's website. | ||

Changing the Game Resolution
Some users are unable to change the resolution from the in-game menu. To change the resolution externally, you need to edit a text "empire script" file. These are tricky to find as they aren't in the Empire game folder in Steam, but actually are found in AppData in the user folder, in
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts\
You want preferences.empire_script
, open with notepad, and edit the 3rd and fourth lines that will say
x_res 0; # x_res <int32>, Fixed window width # y_res 0; # y_res <int32>, Fixed window height #
Replace the zeroes with the resolution options of your choice (1920x1080, 800x600 etc).
