Essential improvements

Administrator elevation required to update saved games

With Windows Vista to 10, the game may fail to autosave, overwrite past saved games, and fail to save related world events, if it is not run as administrator. This can cause dialogues, items and cutscenes to disappear or be buggy when loading a past saved game.

Running as administrator is not required, nor is any compatibility setting, as long as the Windows Search service is running, read and write access is ensured for the save game data location said directory has "Allow files in this folder to have content indexed..." enabled.

Skip intro videos

Delete/rename video files[citation needed]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>\Video.
  2. Delete or rename logo.bik.

Pause key mapping

On some keyboards, the pause key (which lets the player tactically pause the game and issue commands) might not work in the game. It can be remapped with AutoHotkey.
Map the pause key[3]
  1. Download and install AutoHotkey.
  2. Create a script file anywhere on the system by RMB → New → AutoHotkey Script.
  3. The script should have the following content:
    V::SendInput, {Pause}
. V can be replaced with any other key.
  4. Run the script, preferably as administrator, then launch the game. Use combat pause by pressing the selected key.
  5. Terminate the script (in the Windows task bar) once the game is closed.
If running the game as administrator, the script has to be run as administrator as well. If it still does not work, look for one of the solutions here.
If pause and break are on the same button on the keyboard, use the following script instead:[4]
V::SendInput, {break}

Issues fixed

Installation on 64-bit systems

On 64-bit systems, the autorun does not work because of an executable error. The game can still be installed by manually running [Drive]\setup\setup.exe.

Torches don't work / game is too dark

If the game seems overall too dark, and light sources like torches don't give off any real light, then you have a common bug. Choose on of the three following fixes.

Use dgVoodoo[5][6]
This actually fixes the torches and other dynamic lights, and also fixes the general darkness issue.
  1. Download dgVoodoo 2. Ignore virus warnings that you might get, it is known to set off false positives.
  2. Unpack dgVoodoo. Copy dgVoodooCpl.exe and dgVoodoo.conf to your Redemption game folder (where the Vampire.exe is). Then do the same with D3D8.dll, D3Dlmm.dll and DDraw.dll under MS/x86.
  3. Execute dgVoodooCpl.exe in the game folder. This opens the dgVoodoo menu. Here, you can set your custom settings for the game. Click on the symbol on the top right (.\) to set this location as running instance. Under the tab DirectX, you can uncheck the watermark and check the option Force VSync if you like.
  4. Now all light sources like torches will work correctly in the game. If the game is TOO bright now, you can adjust with the in-game settings.
  5. If you want to customize dgVoodoo further, see here.
Use Windows Application Compatibility Toolkit[6]
This doesn't actually fix the torches and other light sources, but it removes the problem of the game being overall too dark, so torches would no longer be necessary.

The steps to get the Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) depend on your system. The following is the guide for Windows 10:

  1. Download the Windows 10 Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK)
  2. At installation, just choose the Compatibility Tools.
  3. Run the Compatibility Administrator (32-bit)
  4. In the side panel, click on the New Database(1) [Untitled_1], then on the top bar, choose Fix
  5. Fill in the following information then press next:
Name of the program to be fixed: Vampire the Masquerade - Redemption
Name of the vendor for this program: White Wolf Studio
Program file location: Browse to your install directory and choose Vampire.exe
  6. Skip the next section (Compatibility Modes)
  7. Under Compatiblity Fixes, select and check DXPrimaryEmulation, highlight it with your mouse, and press the button Parameters. Enter -DisableMaxWindowedMode and confirm.
  8. If the test run is successful, then you can choose File → Install in the top bar to make the changes permanent.
Try running the game on Dedicated GPU
Will fix ambient lighting/gamma issues.
May not work for all card models.
  1. If you're a laptop owner, and your system comes with two graphics cards (Nvidia Optimus) - make sure you are NOT running VtM Redemption on integrated (Intel) GPU. Switch to the dedicated GPU via Nvidia Control Panel. Right click on the executable/shortcut and select "Change default graphics processor..." option.
  2. Known to work with Nvidia 610M. Videos may start to flicker, removing the Video folder is advised.

Mods

Age of Redemption

Rebalances the game and adds additional features. It can be downloaded here.

The mod also changes a lot around the gameplay, for example it adds respawning enemies, changes level design, changes the way blood and feeding works, changes the frenzy mechanic, makes traps much deadlier, adds duration for torches and completely alters many Disciplines. Install at your own discretion.
Includes a custom config that allows you to change many aspects of the game such as enemy AI behaviour, turn on and off some options from the Age of Redemption mod, overall difficulty of the game and much more.
There are inconsistencies and problems that are present with the mod which do not exist in the vanilla game, such as wrong HUD, logs and sounds taken from the modern ages part of the game, some cutscenes might end early due to the enemies interacting with the player in some cases, a few items placement has been altered that makes their appearance wrong with what you actually pick up. For example, in the Silver Mines 2 instead of a regular shield that lies on the ground, you are given a blessed knight shield etc. The new frenzy mechanic can cause a softlock if all of your party members die except for the one that is affected by frenzy and there are no enemis left on the level for the AI party member to seek them out in order to lower the frenzy meter by killing enemies, instead they will stand still and you will not be able to control that last party member affected by frenzy at all forcing you to load a previous save file (assuming you did not save after this happened).

Neural Redemption HD Textures (ModDB mirror)

Original game textures upscaled with neural networks. All game textures are upscaled. Texture depth must be set to 16-bit in display advanced options when this mod is installed.

The Dark Path HD Texture Pack

An alternative hand-made full texture pack for a darker and moodier look.
