Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is a singleplayer and multiplayer first-person action, shooter and vehicle combat game in the Star Trek series.

The game was released in two separate versions - the original 1997 release on 5 CDs, and a 1998 release on a single DVD. The Chekov's Lost Missions expansion was also released in 1998, but is incompatible with the DVD version unless a workaround is used. Digital releases are based on the CD version and do not include the expansion pack.

Use dgVoodoo 2[1]
  1. Download the latest version of dgVoodoo 2.
  2. Extract dgVoodooCpl.exe and the contents of the MS\x86 into <path-to-game>.
  3. Run the included dgVoodooCpl.exe program and configure the following settings.
    • General
      • Fullscreen or Windowed
    • DirectX
      • Videocard: ATI Radeon 8500 (best results - no corrupted nebulas)
      • Filtering: Desired anisotropic filtering
      • Resolution: Desired output resolution
Note: Widescreen resolutions cause the game to appear stretched.
      • Antialiasing: Desired AA level
      • Fast video memory access: Checked (the game has z-buffer issues unless this is enabled)
  4. Launch sfad3d.exe instead of sfa.exe. The latter uses software rendering.

Issues fixed

Unable to play MPEG-2 video on DVD version

The game uses the now-obsolete MCI interface instead of DirectDraw for videoplayback. MCI was fully supported only until Windows 98/Me.
Install the Windows 10 Upgrade Patch
Incorporates gulikozas' dxmci fix and prepares the game for a potential HD video upgrade
Works with Direct3D and software rendering

Unable to use Chekov's Lost Missions with DVD version

If the expansion is installed with the DVD version, the game crashes when trying to play a movie file from the addon.
Install Compatibility patch for Chekov´s Lost Missions
Replaces "Interplay MVE video" files with H.264/MPEG encoded movie files which are compatible with the DVD version.

Controller not recognized/working as intended in-game

The game can have issues recognizing gamepads and similar peripherals on modern operating systems.
Set a preferred device[3]
  1. Navigate to Control Panel.
  2. Navigate to Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers.
  3. Find the desired controller in the list and right-click the device, then select "Game Controller Settings."
  4. Under Advanced, set the device to be the "Preferred device" for older games.
