Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered is a remastered version of the PlayStation 4 game from 2018. The game and subsequent remaster for PlayStation 5 were developed by Insomniac Games, while the PC version is being developed by Nixxes Software and published by PlayStation PC. Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered is the first traditional Spider-Man game to release on PC since The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014. The PC version improves in a variety of aspects compared to the PlayStation 5 release, including improved shadows, improved ray traced reflections (full resolution instead of half resolution, and more objects can be included in the ray traced reflections), FoV slider, HBAO+, FSR 2.1, XeSS, DLSS 2, DLSS Frame Generation, DLAA, ultrawide screen support, improved texture filtering and an unlocked frame rate.[1]

Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered released on August 12, 2022, almost two years after it was originally released for the PlayStation 5 in 2020.

The PC version was well received by reviewers with it being praised as a good quality port, with some criticism going to performance sometimes not being optimal on certain hardware configurations. The game was found to be quite CPU intensive in some scenarios, especially during traversal and when ray traced reflections are turned on.[2] Four days before release, Nixxes Software implemented significant performance improvements, ray tracing fixes and expanded graphical options for ray tracing, traffic density and crowd density to address most issues reviewers noted, indicating that some reviews might not fully reflect the state of the game on release date.[3][4][5][6]

Post-launch patches brought various bug, crash, stability and ray tracing related fixes, improved VRAM management and fixed HBAO+ implementation.[7][8] Additionally, DLSS Frame Generation and XeSS support were added, while updating the FSR integration to 2.1.1.[9] These patches also introduced sharpness sliders for both upscaling and in-game sharpening filters, contrast slider, HDR paper white slider and NVidia Reflex support for all compatible GPU's.[10][11]

Issues Resolved

Freezes and stutters during traversal

An SSD is strongly recommended for any graphics preset above Very Low at 720p at 30 FPS to prevent streaming related stutter and freezes.[21]
Install the game on an SSD[21]

Windows 10 version 1909 (Build 18363) or higher error

Patch v1.817.1.0 improved the Windows version check to prevent false positives of this error message.[22]
Update your Windows installation to Windows 10 version 1909 (Build 18363) or higher[23]
Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered makes use of the DirectX Agility SDK, which requires Window 10 version 1909 (Build 18363) or newer.
Some specific revisions of Windows 10 1909, 2004 and 20H2 don't have this SDK installed. If Windows 10 version 1909 is installed, the revision number should exceed or be equal to .1350. For Windows 10 Version 2004 and 20H2, the revision number should exceed or be equal to .789.[24]
Turn off compatibility mode on Steam.exe[25]
If you get a Windows 10 version 1909 (Build 18363) or higher error message even though they have a newer Windows version, for example Windows 11. Then the issue is likely that Steam.exe is running in compatibility mode.
  1. Go to steam installation folder, for example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam
  2. Right click on Steam.exe
  3. Click on Properties
  4. Go to the Compatibility tab and make sure Run this program in compatibility mode is not checked.
  5. Click on Change settings for all users
  6. Click on Apply
  7. Fully close Steam, so it is not even visible on the taskbar anymore
  8. Open Steam again
  9. Play the game

Video Memory Crash

The game can crash with the following error: The game has crashed due to using more video memory than currently available on this PC. Please try lowering your graphics settings, lowering your resolution, and closing any unnecessary background applications before running the game again.[26]
High-end PC's: let Windows manage the page file size[26]
This error can occur on systems with high-end hardware, when the Windows page file does not offer enough space to allocate VRAM budget. This can happen when a custom page file size is set as it is typically recommend letting Windows automatically manage the virtual memory size.
  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard
  2. Search for sysdm.cpl
  3. Go to the Advanced tab
  4. Press Settings under the Performance section.
  5. Press the Advanced tab in the Performance Options window.
  6. Under Virtual memory, press Change.
  7. Check that the box for Automatically manage paging file size for all drives is enabled.
Low-end PC's and laptops: lower your graphical settings[26]
This crash might occur on lower-end hardware because the available VRAM and system memory is not enough for the selected graphical settings.

Ray tracing is greyed out even though GPU supports it

Some specific Windows version lack the support for Shader Model 6.6, which is required by the game.[24]
Update your Windows installation to Windows 10 version 1909 (Build 18363) or higher[24]

Issues unresolved

SMT and HT causing inconsistent CPU usage

Happens when SMT (Ryzen) or HT (Intel) is enabled.[27]
The game seemingly can't efficiently use the logical cores available via the use of SMT/HT when the CPU has more than 6 cores, disabling it may increase CPU core utilization and improve game performance in CPU intensive scenarios.[28]
Disabling SMT/HT can severely impact the performance of games and applications. Strongly advised to turn it back on after quitting the game.
Currently unknown if developers are aware of this issue and if they are working on a fix.
Disable CPU multithreading[29]
  1. If using Ryzen CPU - Disable SMT (Simultaneous multithreading) in BIOS settings or via the Ryzen Master program.
  2. If using an Intel CPU - Disable HT (Hyper-Threading) from BIOS settings

Textures not loading in at full resolution or only really late

The game suffers from an issue where some textures (like on cops, armor and cop cars) appear at a much lower resolution. The cause of this and whether the developers are working on this is unknown. There is no fix or workaround for this bug so far.[30]

Can't progress after playing the side mission Aiding a Human in Silver Lining DLC

In rare cases players have reported their progression halted after playing the side mission Aiding a Human in the Silver Lining DLC. The mission will then not completely resolve, resulting in being unable to fast travel, start new objectives or switch to a different DLC.[31]
Workaround: follow specific instructions[31]
  1. Finishing the Aiding a Human mission.
  2. Swing to the Brooklyn Bridge and continue onto the bridge as far as possible.
  3. The game will show a warning message. Confirm this message.
  4. The player will now be put back into the game and the mission will have completed successfully.

Unable to take a photo of the Empire State Building on Intel GPU

Players running the game on an Intel GPU can run into an issue where taking a photo of the Empire State Building is impossible, which blocks further game progression. This is apparently an Intel GPU driver bug.[32]
Intel is planning to implement the fix into drivers for legacy integrated GPUs (10th generation processors and older) in the future.[32]
Intel ARC GPU: update GPU-driver to 31.0.101.3802 or newer[32]
Intel GPUs on 11th generation processors and newer: update GPU-driver to 31.0.101.3616 or newer[32]

John Bubniak Restoration Mod

Restores the original likeness of Peter Parker as portrayed by John Bubniak from the non-remastered PlayStation 4 version of the game.
Use restoration mod[33]
  1. Download Spider-Man PC Modding Tool and unpack the archive to any folder.
  2. Run SMPCTool.exe once and select the game's asset archive folder, <path-to-game>\asset_archive\.
  3. Download John Bubniak's face return - PS4 face restoration mod and unpack the archive to any folder.
  4. From the Modding Tool, select Mod Manager and then Add to add the mod to the list. Click Install Mods To Game. The mod will be applied to the game.
Installing John Bubniak Skin Tone and Actual PS4 Peter Photos alongside the main John Bubniak mod is strongly recommended. Installation process is the same.
Doesn't changes facial animations, so game still uses modified motion capture for Ben Jordan's face.
