Warnings

For Games for Windows - LIVE on Windows 8 or later, install the latest Games for Windows - LIVE software.

FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is a racing game released in 2008. It is an enhanced port of FlatOut 2, featuring new gameplay modes, improved graphics as well as 4 new drivers (both character-wise and in each race) and at least 2 new cars.

The game was released for PC on retail on August 1, 2008 with Games for Windows Live functionality and DRM, gradually being released for Games for Windows Marketplace and Steam over the following years.

On January 21, 2023, a DRM-free but singleplayer-only version was released on ZOOM Platform.[1] On March 7, 2024, the Steam version was updated to match the ZOOM Platform release.[2]

Issues unresolved

Audio Distortion

Engine sounds are extremely distorted and often blown out, with some sound effects not playing at times. While turning down in game audio can help, a solution is not known yet.
Fixed on digital versions (Steam and Zoom Platform) [6]

Issues fixed

The DVD will not install/uninstall due to missing privileges

Run autorun.exe as administrator[7]
When uninstalling the game, the same problem pops up, but the fix above will not work.
Run an uninstaller program

An example is Wise Program Uninstaller. In that case, open that, find FlatOut Ultimate Carnage in the list and select Safe Uninstall. Afterwards, the uninstaller attempts to remove related files and registries.

Game does not start after install

Install Games for Windows Live Marketplace Client

Juddery motion despite having a consistent frame rate

Use either 50 Hz or 100 Hz if the monitor is capable. If using G-Sync/FreeSync, use a third-party tool to cap the frame rate at 50 FPS or leave it uncapped for 100 FPS. Only leave it uncapped if the PC is capable of delivering 100 FPS consistently.

'Could not obtain native display resolution' error when using multiple monitors

Disconnect all secondary monitors and launch the game once. Close the game and reconnect monitors, all subsequent launches should work fine.

Stuttering, unstable FPS

Set launcher.exe and Fouc.exe to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3.[citation needed]

Other information

Play without Games for Windows - LIVE

Play without GFWL[8]
  1. Download a replacement xlive.dll.
  2. Extract into <path-to-game>.

Notes

Disables LIVE multi-player.
This is partially used in the ZOOM Platform release.[9]

Music from FlatOut 2 in Ultimate Carnage

Download mod[10]
  1. Download this file (or this file if you only wish to add music from FlatOut 2 and replace the Ultimate Carnage one).
  2. Extract to the <path-to-game>.
This may cause issues with GFWL.[11]

Confirmed by a user whom has purchased the game through the Publisher website. They provide three bin files containing game data, and a setup exe file that installs those bin files, as well as an outdated version of the GFWL redistributable that's required for the game to launch. No sign of an online key.

Once the game is installed, a xlive.dll file can be found. Though seems like the game has been modified further, as removing the file will cause the game to crash at launch.
