Since when are we removing Steam paths if it's not a Steam exclusive game? How will the user know what the install path is for Steam if it's not listed?

Anonymous (talkcontribs)

I'm not aware of so much removing, but just plain not listing them, as there almost never is an appropriate reason to do so. An install path will not serve much purpose, and Steam has got the "Browse local files..." function built-in.

Widescreen resolution section

As far as I can tell the widescreen resolution section has nothing to do with widescreen. The game already 16:9 by default. In fact, there is no way to make the gameplay area anything but 16:9. The only thing the game lets you do is to either upscale it or downscale it while preserving the aspect ratio.

The only value in this section is informing the user how to set the resolution manually, which is why I renamed it to Low resolution fix before Soeb reverted those changes.

Anonymous (talkcontribs)

No, in essence it doesn't have much to do with widescreen, although the section is commonly used for all resolution related fixes. It's placement is also much clearer under video settings (to which it is related), than under issues.

In addition, the game functions better in low (sub 1280x720) resolutions when they are set in the configuration file entirely manually.

Why is this page split so? All the notes from Windows apply to the rest (except for borderless windowed). This makes absolutely no sense. 89.177.44.236 17:27, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

The Mac and Linux sections are for information specific to that system such as save game location. Windows is just a basis for general information. Having them repeat would look messy and awkward and putting it outside may be confusing.

89.177.44.236 (talkcontribs)

That's why I suggest making one big section. All in Windows applies to all, the save game location can be merged and the minreqs are the same across all systems (according to the official website). This makes it look like none of those apply to Linux/Mac.

Couldn't agree more, but sadly that decision isn't up to me and I'm sure Andrew has his own reasons for formatting it the way he has. We'll have to see if he responds.

Hi guys, thanks for taking the time out to reply. The issue about supporting multiple OSes is quite contentious on this site. I once had a very large camp saying that each game should have a different page per OS (IMO this wouldn't have worked very well).

To be honest I am quite comfortable having duplicated information in each OS header level 1 section. This is because even on this article, there room for additional OS-specific information, such as system requirements, video settings, performance improvements, and the way save games are handled and synced.

However there is an increasing argument to make the 'Availability' table a header level 1 at the top as well, and to bring it out of the OS sections. For example for FTL, Steam and Developer website offer Windows, Mac and Linux versions all in one purchase, whereas GOG.com only gives Windows and Mac at the moment. This could be made clearer in a table at the top, before delving into OS-specific headers. Once I implement this in the sample article, PCGamingWiki will be the only place to get that kind of cross-platform information in a simple easy to read table.

One day thanks to Steam and also how cloud computing has made choice of OSes largely irrelevant, Linux is going to be very popular as an alternative gaming OS, and Windows won't be the default option for gaming. So I'll hold off assuming that all information goes into a single Windows header for now.

I'm happy to discuss further, but those are my reasons for it being presented liked that at the moment.

I'm afraid I have to apologize. I was a bit of a cowboy and didn't read the talk page before editing. I moved the save game information under one table with appropriate labels and removed the "duplicate" headers/tables. If this is out of line with the Wiki rules, please let me know, I'll be more than happy to revert it or help fix it up.
