TOCA Race Driver 3, also known as V8 Supercars 3 and DTM Race Driver 3 in Australia and Germany respectively, is a singleplayer and multiplayer racing game developed and published by Codemasters. It is a licensed TOCA game in most regions except in Germany where it is a licensed DTM game.

Despite carrying the TOCA license in most regions, the game does not feature the British Touring Car Championship.

The game was released in North America on February 22, 2006, followed by the European release two days later on February 24, 2006. It was later released on Steam on February 13, 2009.

It was delisted from GOG.com on May 29, 2009 and Steam on May 2010 due to licensing related-reason.[1]

Essential improvements

Patches

The latest retail patch is v1.1 Patch (June 2006). Digital releases and re-releases from CD Projekt are pre-patched to that version.

Run without a DVD

Copy files from the DVD to the game directory[6]
Only works with re-releases from CD Projekt.
  1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\codemasters\Race Driver 3.
  2. Set PATH_CD to <path-to-game>\GameData.
  3. Ensure that HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\codemasters\Race Driver 3 does not exist. If it does, delete it.
  4. Copy rd3_* from the DVD to <path-to-game>\GameData.

120+ FPS
High frame rates affect tire friction negatively, making cornering harder.[8] Set refresh rate on 60hz and enable option Lock Frame Rate in Advanced Settings. Also, the higher the FPS, the stronger the AI gets.
High dynamic range display (HDR)
See the glossary page for potential alternatives.

Widescreen resolution

Set resolution in pchardwareconfig.ini[9]
  1. Run the Hardware Setup tool and select 1024x768.
  2. Open pchardwareconfig.ini in <path-to-game>\savedata.
  3. Change the FullScreenHeight= and FullScreenWidth= values to match your resolution.
  4. Change the FullScreenRefresh= to your resolution's refresh rate (usually 60 or 75).
  5. Save your changes.

Ultra-widescreen

Use SUWSF mod
Does not require to edit the game's exe file.
  • Download Toca Race Driver 3 - Correct aspect-ratio and FoV mod
  • Paste mod files inside the main folder. Then open HardwareSetup.exe and select your game settings. Use for instance 16:9 resolutions. Then press Save and Exit.
  • Go to savedata folder, open pchardwareconfig.ini file, and head to [Graphics] settings. Here, you'll have to edit manually these values:

MonitorAspect=V4()
FullScreenRefresh=
FullScreenHeight=
FullScreenWidth=

  • If your resolution is, for instance, 3440x1440@144Hz then your aspect-ratio is 43/18, so:

MonitorAspect=V4(43.000000,18.000000,0.000000,0.000000)
FullScreenRefresh=144
FullScreenHeight=1440
FullScreenWidth=3440

  • Save and close the file.

Windowed

Enable windowed mode[6]
Ignores a selected resolution, locking the window to half of the desktop resolution and aspect ratio.
  1. Open pchardwareconfig.ini in <path-to-game>\savedata.
  2. Change StartWindowed=0 to StartWindowed=1.
  3. Save your changes.

Notes

  1. This version of StarForce DRM does not work on Windows 8.1, Windows 10, or Windows 11.[2][3] For supported versions of Windows the StarForce driver may need to be updated manually using SFUPDATE.
  2. SafeDisc retail DRM does not work on Windows 10[4] or Windows 11 and is disabled by default on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 when the KB3086255 update is installed.[5]
  3. 3.0 3.1 When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  4. 4.0 4.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/11500/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (11500) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.

    At 120 FPS issues don't seem to be easily noticeable, but they might be there. Cornering gets harder the higher the frame rate is.
