Essential improvements

OutRun 2 FXT

Replacement configuration tool that adds XInput rumble support, custom resolutions, windowed mode, additional camera views and more. Can be downloaded here.
Running FXTConfig.exe as admin for is required for first time use to apply its settings. Launch the game using OR2FXT.exe instead of its stock executable to ensure the modifications stick.
Before attempting to install texture replacement mods with OutRun FXT, make sure the <path-to-game>\FXTcfg\texpacks\original folder is empty and your game's files are not flagged as read-only to avoid errors.

Restore missing lens flare & bloom effects

A simple oversight with the PC conversion caused the lens flare and bloom effects from the console versions to go missing.
Instructions[2]
  1. Go to <path-to-game>\Media\ folder.
  2. Look for the lens_flare_offset.bin file and copy it.
  3. Paste this file into the <path-to-game>\Common\ folder.

Issues fixed

Run the game at screen refresh rate

Fullscreen mode defaults to 60 Hz, even if the screen refresh rate is set higher than that.
Set screen refresh rate[citation needed]
  1. Download Special K.
  2. Copy SpecialK32.dll to the installation folder.
  3. Rename SpecialK32.dll to d3d9.dll.
  4. Start the game and exit.
  5. Open d3d9.ini in the installation folder.
  6. Change TargetFPS=0.0 to TargetFPS=60.0.
  7. Change RefreshRate=-1 to RefreshRate=0.

OutRun 2 FXT: Overlay graphics occasionally popping up

OutRun 2 FXT includes a few new overlay graphics replacing their original counterparts, however this feature currently only works properly on fullscreen mode and it breaks when forcing window mode. Disabling Enable Overlay from the OutRun 2 FXT configuration tool may be preferable as the updated overlay graphics clashes with the stock GUI assets.[7]

"Unable to create Direct3D Device with current settings" Error when using Outrun 2 FXT

Delete outrun2006.ini
This is caused by a conflict in the existing configuration file of the original game with Outrun 2 FXT and causes the game to crash on launch.
  1. Delete outrun2006.ini located in <path-to-game>
  2. Launch FXTConfig.exe and save changes to create a new outrun2006.ini.

Install texture mods with OutRun FXT[8]
  1. Install OutRun 2 FXT.
  2. Download the texture packs for OutRun 2 FXT here and extract the texmods folder somewhere convenient.
  3. Browse the texmods folder that you have extracted, then copy and paste the Arcade Buttons and Uncensored Clarissa (Desired Language) folder into <path-to-game>\FXTcfg\texpacks\texmods folder.
  4. Disable Read-only attribute for the <path-to-game>\Sprite folder if present.[9]
  5. Run FXTConfig.exe, then click the Install Texture Packs button and click Yes when prompt.

"All this art is great, but without an engine to power it, it’s not going to be much of a game. To this end we’ve been using our in-house Sunshine engine to make it all whizz around at high speed.
