L.A. Noire Save Game Manager[edit]

L.A. Noire Save Game Manager is a utility developed by ReanimationXP. It's a program which allows the manual creation of save points during a mission. This allows one to create save games during a mission, and to reload part-way through a mission. This allows one to attempt different dialogue options without restarting the mission completely.[7]

Issues fixed[edit]

Freezing Title Screen[edit]

L.A. Noire for Windows is known to freeze at the title screen during the synchronization process, or immediately after, when the camera moves away from the L.A. Noire neon sign. There are several possible reasons for this. Some of the most common are:

  • Anti-Virus Related Issues where game files are misrecognized as malware.[9]
  • .NET Framework 3.5 or C++ runtime libraries are not properly installed or configured. [10]
  • Firewall prevents game from making a connection to the internet.
  • Compatibility options are set incorrectly on Steam.

Check that that you have the latest versions of .NET Framework, C++ Runtime Libraries, and DirectX Components installed. Also be sure that your firewall is disabled or contains an exception for L.A. Noire, so that the game can connect to the internet. And make sure that Steam is not set to use compatibility features.

Fix Compatibility options set incorrectly on Steam

  1. Go to <Steam-folder>.
  2. Right-click on Steam.exe, choose Properties.
  3. Click on the Compatibility tab.
  4. Uncheck any boxes that are checked, and click Apply.
  5. Then, click the Show settings for all users button.
  6. Again, make sure none of these boxes are checked, and click OK.
  7. Click OK to close any open dialog boxes.
  8. Double click on Steam.exe to launch Steam.

Fix Update Social Club application to the latest version.

Game Freezes on 64-bit Windows 7[edit]

On 64-bit Windows 7, the game might freeze as soon as the synchronization (refresh) symbol shows up, which appears right after the Team Bondi logo. This is due to the game being incompatible with the current version of the .NET Framework 3.5 installed into your system. This is also the main reason why the associated .NET Framework installer provided with the game won't install.

Fix Fix the .NET Framework on 64-bit Windows 7

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.exe and press Enter.
  3. Uncheck Microsoft Framework 3.5.1.
  4. Click OK. .NET 3.5 will be disabled and the user must restart.
  5. On next boot, go back and check Microsoft Framework 3.5.1. This will re-install .NET 3.5 and correct the issue.
Information If this does not work, run the .NET Framework clean-up tool, and then repeat the above steps.
Information If the problem persists after following the above, delete ypatcher.exe from <path-to-game>. The game should start up.

Error Patching: Error Binary Patching File[edit]

Fix Remove patched files and re-patch[11]

  1. Go to <path-to-game>.
  2. Remove any file with a .patched extension.
  3. Remove Social Club v1.0.*.0 Setup.exe.
  4. Run Patch_2382_*****_1.exe.
  5. Press Update.
  6. Start game via launcher.
Information If the same thing happens again, uninstall and re-install the full game and attempt to patch.

Rockstar Games Auto-Updater stuck at "Checking for Updates"[edit]

Fix Manually run the patcher

Information Might only affect Steam version.
  1. Go to <path-to-game>.
  2. Run LANPatcher.exe.
  3. The game should download an update and launch.

Slowdown, lag, or frame-rate issues[edit]

Fix Tweaking game via command line switches

  1. Run the LANLauncher.exe in <path-to-game>.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Enter -str and/or -npd and/or +jobs_numThreads 0 (with a space between each command) in the Command Line field to enable a single threaded renderer, which may improve performance or compatibility on some systems.
  4. If the problem persists, switching the Renderer field to DirectX 11 in the same options menu can also improve performance significantly.

Crash-to-desktop on Windows 8[edit]

Fix Apply patches for Windows 8 compatibility

Information It is recommended to first follow Rockstar's official instructions, and if this does not work then to follow the instructions below.
  1. Download this file containing fixed cases.big.pc and out.wad.pc files.
  2. Extract the .rar file to <path-to-game>, overwrite if asked.
  3. Update Rockstar Social Club to the latest version.
    • If the game was not purchased through Steam, you may also need to download and install a Windows 8 compatibility patch available from Rockstar.
  4. Launch the game.

Endless Launcher Loop[edit]

An endless launcher loop or a crash after re-running setup might occur if Steam's access permissions are incorrect. Running Steam as an Administrator may resolve this. Running the game in offline mode also might be useful thing to try out.

Fix Run Steam as an Administrator (short-term solution)

  1. Locate the Steam shortcut on your desktop or within your start menu.
  2. Right-click on the shortcut and select Run as Administrator.

Fix Fix Steam permissions

  1. Do a clean reinstall of Steam; this should fix the permissions.
  2. Relaunch L.A. Noire and wait for the first-time setup to complete.

Missing Main Menu[edit]

The main menu might disappear in the Steam version of L.A. Noire. To solve it, try the following:

Fix Defragment the game files/hard drive

  1. Close and exit Steam.
  2. Go to <path-to-game>
  3. Delete the file labeled Cases.
  4. Launch Steam.
  5. Select Library, and right-click on L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition.
  6. Select Properties, followed by the Local Files tab.
  7. Select Verify Integrity of Game Cache....
  8. Once verifying has finished, run Defragment Cache Files.
  9. After defragmenting is complete, also defragment your hard drive.
  10. Run the game.
Information Also ensure that your C++, .NET, and DirectX packages are installed and up-to-date.

Fix Alternative solution to the Missing Main Menu Issue

  1. Try launching the L.A. Noire from the main executable, LANoire.exe, rather than using the LANLauncher.exe executable.
  2. Make sure the game is booting to a native resolution by changing the settings in the launcher options.
  3. Try adding -windowed into the Command Line field in the options menu of the launcher.
  4. Right-click on Steam and click Run as administrator, then once Steam is open run LANoire.exe
  5. Run the game in a simple resolution such as 256 color and 640 resolution
  6. Run both the LANLauncher.exe and the LANoire.exe in compatibility mode for a different version of Windows by right-clicking the files and choosing properties, then compatibility. Also put a checkmark in the Run as Administrator boxes.
Information If you are running dual monitors or an unconventional display set-up, try running using only one monitor.

Nvidia Video Driver crashes[edit]

On some setups, including Windows 7 with an Nvidia graphics card, the game may crash frequently in DX11 mode. You may receive a notice in the notification area stating that the video driver has stopped working and has been recovered. If this happens, try playing in DX9 mode.

Black border around game[edit]

This is caused by the display's overscan handling. See the Overscan entry for solutions.

USB Controller Problems[edit]

With certain controllers connected to the PC (e.g. Wheel or Flight pedals) a bug can occur whereby even with controller set to disabled in the game menus the game still tries to accept controller input for some game controls and ignores keyboard input. Most notably this occurs when trying to drive cars. You will be unable to drive forward or reverse as long as the problem controller is plugged in to the personal computer.

Fix Force controller Detection To Be a Default USB Device

  1. Open the game launcher.
  2. Click Options.
  3. At the bottom where it says Command Line, add -joysticktype 1.
  4. Click OK.

Problems with Rockstar Social Club[edit]

You may have a Social Club account and can successfully login to it on the website. However, logging on to it via the in-game overlay may result in errors such as "Invalid E-Mail or Password".

Fix Can't Login to Rockstar Social Club In-Game

To fix this, simply download and install the latest version of the L.A. Noire Social Club application located in this article.
Information This fix should also resolve similar issues within Max Payne 3.

Yellow Cab Bug[edit]

Fix How to bypass the Yellow Cab Bug

  1. Yellow Cab bugs out in White Shoe Murder
  2. Drive to the corner of 7th and Garland. The driver will be standing on his cab, preventing the dispatch from updating you.

Issues unresolved[edit]

Corrupt License File[edit]

When starting the game, a social club "Corrupt License File" error message is displayed and the game refuses to start. I have found a fix that might work, after many hours of research I found out that the only reason my game has been doing this is because L.A Noire was not installed in program files in local disk C with rockstar social club. So if your files are saved away from local disk C Try moving them there and try it out.

GPU compatibility[edit]

Following graphics cards are known to have problems with the L.A. Noire:

  • Any graphics card with less than 256 MB per GPU
  • ATI Radeon HD 5570 1024 MB
  • ATI Radeon HD 3870 512 MB AGP Pro
  • Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT 512 MB AGP Pro

Unable to install game to FAT32 partition[edit]

Installation of the game may not work on partitions formatted using FAT32. This problem occurs in Steam when the progress of the download indefinitely "suspends" around the 90% point. Recommended course of action is to relocate your installation to an NTFS partition.

Launch parameters[edit]

You can supply launch parameters to L.A. Noire for example in a situation were you're running into compatibility problems, or if you're having serious performance issues. These may help you debug the issue, and thus resolve the problem.

To input launch parameters you have to open the launcher of the game, access the Options menu. There you can write the parameters into the Command Line field of the launcher. You might have to start the game manually using LANLauncher.exe located inside the installation folder to see the launcher. It's noteworthy that Steam always starts the game using LANLauncher.exe.

Command Notes
-windowed Run game in a window.
-ignorefocus Don't pause the game if you Alt-Tab or click out of its window.
-mousefree Allow mouse outside the game window. (Requires windowed mode).
-str Enable single threaded renderer, which may improve performance or compatibility on some systems.
-npd Disable the 'D3D_PUREDEVICE' flag from device creation. May help if you have graphics compatibility issues.
-nosound Disable all sound.
-L Change the language - use English, French, German, Italian or Spanish, e.g. -L french
-joysticktype Force a specific directinput controller type. Can be used to try different controller button layouts if your controller isn't specifically supported.
