useless screenshots

i think we already discussed about something like this before.. anyway, before re-uploading RAGE screenshot (which i had already done) you should check

and btw i don't think that default controller bindings have some relevance

Mirh (talk)12:13, 25 November 2013

The ones I've uploaded are of higher quality (they use the .png format, which doesn't have any of the side effects of the .jpeg format such as pixelation).

And the controller layout screenshot I have are just to show where the controller button mappings can be changed. Default gamepad layout screenshots I find are useless, unless the option to switch between button map layouts are available.

It's your call if you want to keep those gamepad layout screenshots.

ThatOneReaper (talk)12:27, 25 November 2013

i know what are the side effects of a jpeg, but i think that once you use more than 90% of jpeg compression (and i did that with 98%) there shouldn't be really so much differences compared to png. i already compared compressed and uncompressed image.. and the difference wasn't noticeable

... i think that we should maybe ask somebody else opinion... let me check on irc..

Mirh (talk)12:32, 25 November 2013

Really?

Mirh (talk)12:35, 16 August 2014

Exactly why is this an issue? I've been replacing JPEG screenshots with PNG equivalents for quite a while now without complaints.

As I mentioned earlier, the screenshots I provide are of higher quality (i.e. lossless format, no artifacts). I only replace screenshots in the following situations:

  1. The screenshots are in a lossy format (i.e. JPEG)
  2. If the screenshots are lossless, then the images are outdated

Otherwise, there is no need to replace them.

Anyways, this issue has been discussed at length already (and a set of image guidelines was implemented recently). PNG is the preferred format to use.

ThatOneReaper (talk)13:37, 16 August 2014

There really is no issue at all. ThatOneReaper is following the recently set guidelines (although I believe that he did begin replacing lossy files with lossless some time ago) exactly as he can if he chooses to. If he was doing so in the opposite direction, one could be taking some issue, but in this case - discussing it is really not in any way productive.

However, one thing I would mention, for example in the case of Natural Selection 2, you could have uploaded the files on the same file name, keeping the file history in tact. If you desired to change their names, the files could have been moved as well. This is also mentioned in the new policy.

Soebtalk|contribs13:48, 16 August 2014

Thanks Soeb.

For Natural Selection 2, I did update the original file. The history is still intact and I just moved the file to match my naming style.

ThatOneReaper (talk)14:04, 16 August 2014

The problem is that even though they are lossless.. he replaced high quality 1080p jpg screenshots with 1650*1050 ones.
Just compare the images, and you'll see there's less information in the pictures.

Not to mention that I actually did this comparison, and while the previous 300KB jpgs loaded in instants, the 1.3MB pngs took nearly 10 seconds each.
Try to see the situation differently: what sounds better? A 8 bit WAV or a 24 bit .ogg?

And for the records, I couldn't spot any compression artificat in the lossy images. You see that lossy doesn't necessarily means crap.

Mirh (talk)15:50, 16 August 2014

There was discussion about this earlier: http://community.pcgamingwiki.com/topic/996-cropped-images-and-general-wiki-guidlines/

However 1080p JPG vs 1050p PNG is like 1080i vs 720p, it's basically preference at that point meaning I don't see reason why they were replaced. Because of scaling though they look almost identical in thumbnail and preview.

BTW why does mediawiki generate PNG thumbnails? I can understand source file being lossless, but thumbnail and prewiew being PNG as well simply takes up bandwidht on both ends without good reason.

Marioysikax (talk)18:03, 16 August 2014

I would really like to join that conversation. Unfortunately I was busy in those days..
Anyhow, what people are struggling to understand is that jpeg has not a fixed compression level. You can even compress lossless with it.

In this case I can't precisely say, but something higher than 95% was used for sure. Which, in your example, is far higher than 1080i

Mirh (talk)05:04, 17 August 2014

You cannot really use 1080i as an example for a screenshot, but that's beside the point.

I can assure you that people are not struggling to understand the jpeg files can be saved using many different methods resulting in different losses in quality. However, a jpeg file saved with the highest quality settings will simple be huge compared to the png.

To add to that, MediaWiki does not check for the settings used in making the particular jpeg file and will instead use a fixed set of settings for all thumbnails, which means that you cannot optimize there, at most turn up the quality everywhere.

I really do not understand the issue here with someone replacing a lossy 1080p jpeg with a lossless 1680x1050 png file. I have myself replaced plenty of bigger jpeg images with my measly 1280x1024 resolution screenshots and so far I have not heard a single cry of despair. And in this particular case, I would say I have not noticed any loss in fidelity between the 1680x1050 screenshots vs. the 1080p jpeg files, while improving the clarity of the files by quite simply, using a superior format for screenshots.

In this particular case you are raising, both screenshots however do waste some space by simply not being cropped, and that could be in this case the only criticism levelled at the work done. However the topic on jpeg vs. png files for screenshots was already covered, and a user's talk page is not the place to come back to it.

There are plenty of things on the wiki that can be done to the benefit of everyone. This conversation is not one of them.

Mirh, if you feel you were excluded from the discussion on the policy by unfortunately not being around at the time, feel free to either open a new thread on the forums about this topic, or contact me in some form - I am always happy to discuss all topics in detail.

Soebtalk|contribs07:15, 17 August 2014

The reasoning is simple, jpeg thumbnails result in loss of clarity especially at lower resolutions. The difference in size between a 290px jpeg and png file are negligible in most cases anyway, but the difference in quality is huge.

Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that the tag is only meant to be on games that are not on Linux. It makes little sense in other cases.

Soebtalk|contribs08:00, 23 July 2014

Fair enough.

Toggle on "Mute on focus lost" in Portal 2

I figured I'd just clear up a small misconception. While Portal 2 specifically doesn't have a toggle, most other Source games do. Some people like being able to switch between the two as they please so they can still hear in-game audio while outside of the game (people with multi-monitor who play 2 games at once, for example). The audio settings template, for ease of use, tracks whether or not a game does that by default, but there are some games where there is a toggle.

Thanks for fixing my mistake on the Portal 2 page, I should have left it unknown if anything.

Nicereddy (talk)16:35, 21 October 2013

I have a Crysis Warhead fix, could you add it?

When you bind anything to mouse 2 it doesn't change secondary fire for dual wielding. You have to edit the actionmaps file in My Documents\My Games\Crysis Warhead\Profiles\Default

You change

<action name="attack2" onPress="1" onRelease="1"> <key name="mouse2" />

to

<action name="attack2" onPress="1" onRelease="1"> <key name="mouse3" />

or whatever the desired key is

98.214.26.18012:41, 15 September 2013

The fix has been added in. Thanks for finding it!

ThatOneReaper (talk)20:22, 15 September 2013

Thanks for adding it, any recommendation for a good wiki editing tutorial or tool so I could do it myself in the future?

98.214.26.18015:11, 16 September 2013

Unfortunately, I do not know any such program that can auto generate wiki portions/articles.

There is some tutorials available on the site that shows basic article creation, styles, and a sample article to showcase the proper layout.

They can be found in the Manual section.

Regarding Half-Life 2: Survivor

Since it's a completely different game, do you think it'd be worth it to make a separate page for it? I'm really interested in it as I'm sure many others are.

Nicereddy (talk)13:55, 30 June 2013

It's not worth making an extra page for it. The entire game is just a rehashed version of Half-Life 2 for Japanese arcades with nothing extra going for it (besides some small additions here and there with a horrible UI). Whatever things that are worth mentioning are already talked about in that Facepunch thread or in the Wikipedia entry. It's best to consider it a variant of Half-Life 2.

That being said, if you want to make it a separate page, go ahead. I just think nothing new would be added to it at the moment.

Thanks for your work on the Quake pages

Thanks for your work on the Quake pages! It's appreciated.

I changed a few things in them if that's okay, if you need anything feel free to ask on the forums.

Best of luck, nicereddy

Nicereddy (talk)22:26, 23 April 2013

No problem. The Quake pages were in dire need of a mass cleanup.

I'm fine with your edits to the pages. I actually appreciate the editing work, fixing things that I missed.

BTW, I specialize in older games so I'll try to get some older titles added in or cleaned up.

Thanks for your support!
