Controller pages gone

The controller pages you moved to the Controller: namespace seem to have disappeared entirely.

Garrett (talk)17:18, 27 January 2014

That would be because I deleted them, I have them saved on my computer and will try uploading them ASAP. I want to try to get them all into a general pattern first, though. Should be done by Wednesday~ (2 days from this post).

Question regarding removal of cleanup tag on Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds

I had a question regarding your 19:37, 27 December 2013 edit of Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds. Based on my (fallible) interpretation of the cleanup tag's usage, the tag was still needed since the game does not yet have an image for the game box. As I'm still learning the proper usage of tags, among other things about the wiki, an explanation of why, in this instance, the tag was unnecessary would be really helpful.

Expack3 (talk)15:48, 27 December 2013

A stub tag would be more fitting in that case. I apologize for not explaining, I didn't realize you had added it right before I removed it until a little while later.

Generally, a cleanup tag means the page is cluttered, strangely formatted, hard to read/navigate, or otherwise just messy. A stub tag simply means that the article is missing important parts, like the cover, infobox, settings templates, etc. It's also for when the article has these templates, but they aren't filled out.

Hopefully that helps!

Nicereddy (talk)17:05, 27 December 2013

It definitely does! Thank you, Nicereddy. Based on your response, I made an edit which adds the stub tag as seems appropriate in this case.

Expack3 (talk)17:16, 27 December 2013

Seems correct to me, I'll see if I can find a cover image for it later today. Thanks for the article!

Nicereddy (talk)17:26, 27 December 2013

Just as an FYI, there's a Playstation game with the same name - and has the same release year and publisher, no less. Also, all the box images for the PC game I could find are all from what seem to be license-incompatible sources (i.e. MobyGames, ReplacementDocs).

Also, you're welcome!

Expack3 (talk)17:52, 27 December 2013

Generally we have the benefit of "Fair Use". As long as the image is used for a relevant reason and as sparingly as possible (e.g. only as the cover image on the page, no where else) we are free to use the covers/logos of games in our articles, regardless of their copyright status.

Fix for missing Catwoman controls in Arkham City

You are unable to do the quickfire disarm for Catwoman using a kb/m but it works with a 360 pad. to fix this add the following to the UserInput.ini located in "C:\Users\<you>\Documents\WB Games\Batman Arkham City GOTY\BmGame\Config\"

add it after the line "IniVersion=6.9"

Bindings=(Name="Tilde",Command="HoldToZoom | QuickGadgetY", Shift=false, Control=false, Alt=false, bIgnoreShift=false, bIgnoreCtrl=false, bIgnoreAlt=false):META:COM_QUICK_GADGET1,1,-1,-1,"",false,true,CI_QuickWhip

Replace tilde with the desired key

Thanks for adding this in advance

98.214.26.18021:11, 19 October 2013

I've added this here.

Thanks for finding this! I reworded some of it so please tell me if there's anything I misunderstood.

Nicereddy (talk)00:03, 20 October 2013

You should also specify that it must be a key not used for any other function in the game in order to work

98.214.26.18001:45, 20 October 2013

Updated it.

FOV screenshots in Source

I recently finished Half-Life: Source, and after doing so, I had the mind to check here to see if there were any interesting nuggets of information to be found... only to find that, much like the game itself, the page was fairly barebones! I couldn't really think of any fixes or whatnot to be posted, but I thought I could easily update stuff like Game Data, Save Game Cloud Syncing, Borderless Fullscreen Windowed, etc. So shadowing my edits to align with the way the Portal and Half-Life 2 pages are done, that's what I did (I neglected to leave summary notes, though :(). And then I got to FOV screenshots...

With my life story out of the way, here's my question to you: How did you capture FOV screenshots for Half-Life 2 without capturing a few pixels worth of movement from Gordon's gun? Is there a command to call in the dev console that stops weapon animations or something? Noob question maybe, but I couldn't find anything in my Googling or Ctrl+F'ing in the Console Command List on Valve's wiki.

Chariblaze (talk)02:58, 22 July 2013

Thanks for doing the Half-Life: Source page! I'd have done it myself, but it isn't available on Linux.

In HL2 Gordon's gun doesn't really move unless you're idle for a long period of time, as far as I remember. If the gun moves a bit between screenshots it doesn't matter a whole lot, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Nicereddy (talk)14:51, 22 July 2013

Settings screenshots

When a game's settings only fill a small area of the screen (as with Valve's games) I'd recommend cropping the screenshot to the box edges or whatever to maximise thumbnail readability.

Garrett (talk)16:21, 21 July 2013

Well, that's going to take a while to fix. Will do.

Nicereddy (talk)16:23, 21 July 2013

References template

Hi,

The edit you made to the references template today had broken, for nearly 3 hours, almost every page on the wiki. If you don't mind, I'd like to ask you to consult such changes on the forums in the future, or at least check if everything still works after the change. In this particular case, every page had a big red text warning about the template references being a loop, as it was calling itself.

Soebtalk|contribs17:09, 16 April 2013

Crap, I didn't even mean to edit it. I was trying to change every page with the old "= References = " to the new one and must have clicked on that page by accident. I'm really sorry.

Nicereddy (talk)18:19, 16 April 2013

It's ok. Thanks for migrating all the pages to the new template, it's much cleaner for all in general. Also, thanks for taking care of the sample article for me, I was quite overwhelmed at the time.

Soebtalk|contribs15:52, 18 April 2013

Moving pages

Hey, I noticed you copied the content of some pages to a new name, instead of moving them ("the arrow on the right > move", just in case). Could you use the move feature of Mediawiki in the future, as to preserve the page history? Thanks!

Soebtalk|contribs14:45, 6 April 2013

I've researched this and I believe I either am blind and can't find it, or I need moderator capabilities to do it. Can you explain where exactly the move button is?

Nicereddy (talk)14:49, 6 April 2013

There's a dropdown menu next to the search bar. Under it, you should see Move, Watch and Refresh. Alternatively, the MediaWiki keyboard shortcut for Move is Alt+Shift+M.

Soebtalk|contribs15:53, 6 April 2013

Yep, I have it. I'm just an idiot, thanks.

More and More people are looking into CitiesXL on r/simcity

Thanks for fixing up the page a bit for me, here is the forum post

http://forums.pcgamingwiki.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=200

it has a few more links in it, this page will be linked on /r/simcity a lot, I will make it worth your while

JRWR - PCGamingWiki Server Admin14:19, 6 April 2013

No problem. If you can find information on the games please post it in their respective discussions page. e.g. if you find a fix for an issue in Cities XL 2011, post it to the discussion page for Cities XL 2011. I'll be sure to add it to the page as soon as I can. Please link to the original forum post as well!

Do you own any of the games? If so can you fill out the video settings/input settings? It's just true/false instead of unknown.

Game data use

Hey! Just wanted to note, that game data is meant for save files/configs. The install directory is of little relevance, even the steam one, since you can move that or install to a different partition, instead the actual place the save games and config files are stored is of some interest. If that happens to be in the installation directory, replace it with <path-to-game> or something similar, as you can choose the install directory in many cases. Thanks!

Soebtalk|contribs04:49, 31 March 2013

That would be me (I'm guessing Torchlight). Technically, a game can be installed anywhere, but my intention was to put the location set by default for those who don't really care. And if the saves files are in the installation directory, my opinion is that the full default location should be put because it would be more useful than shortcuts.

Netko (talk)06:58, 31 March 2013

Well, it seems to be a bit of both of you. ;)

However, what you did was make a separate table for the installation directory (and another important thing to remember is that Steam by no means is the only way to install it), which is largely irrelevant in general, but still fine as it doesn't make it seem like the save games are stored there. If there's only one table, it should be assumed that it is also for save game data/config files. I corrected a few of those today (mostly using random references found online), but it'd be generally best to leave it empty unless that's where it actually is stored.

Alternatively, if it is under the game installation directory, just put {{ii}} underneath it noting what the default is - seems like the best of both worlds.

Soebtalk|contribs07:19, 31 March 2013

I'll definitely take your advice into account.

Netko (talk)08:04, 31 March 2013

That was definitely a mistake on my part. I think the install directory is relevant because most users will install it to the default location, especially those who are tech illiterate and would actually need help.

I'll work on improving the save game locations I made.

Nicereddy (talk)13:41, 31 March 2013

Thanks. Btw., when noting the Steam path for userdata on Linux, use ~/.steam/steam/ as a start, as that symlink always points to the correct installation place of Steam, regardless of where the user moved the whole directory.

Red Eclipse

Edited by author.
Last edit: 08:02, 30 March 2013

Hi, I'm a Red Eclipse contributor (mainly testing, too stupid to program!) and I can assure you that you don't need to use the command line to change your aspect ratio. :)

Superuser (talk)20:11, 29 March 2013

Like I said on reddit, thanks for your contribution!

The WSGF page for Red Eclipse says it requires command line, perhaps it's outdated. If you believe the game does not in fact require command line feel free to change it back to true.

If you have it downloaded on your computer can you include images of the settings as well? It'd be appreciated, a template is available on the sample article page.

Once again, thank you.

Nicereddy (talk)20:17, 29 March 2013

Oh sure, the settings are split across several screens actually. You should try it too! It comes at the amazing price of... zero dollars for a whole lot of fraggin' fun!

I like editing wikis in general and have over 1000 edits on Wikipaedia. I wonder, is there an 'exemplary' article I can copy ideas from on this wiki?

Superuser (talk)20:22, 29 March 2013

Here's a short list of AAA titles we tried to cover exceptionally well on release day, they're probably the best you can find.

Does the game work well on low-end hardware? My computer has pretty bad specs right now so I'm limited to Source engine games and older games.

Nicereddy (talk)20:26, 29 March 2013

Haha, amazingly. It's always been a goal of the Cube 2 Engine (and RE too) to be very good on older hardware. Until 2 months ago my rig was an ancient shitty mid-range computer from 2002 (when XP first came out in my country) upgraded to a GeForce 6800 GT. It ran on a solid 30 FPS, and it was just about the only 3D game I could play that was made after 2003.

You can try /texreduce (reduces texture quality drastically - not a permanent setting) if your rig is that ancient. To type in commands by the way, you just press the forward slash key in-game (or in the menu, actually) and try out a command.

But honestly, if you can play Source Engine games, this should run on over 60 fps. By the way, a protip if you have an NVIDIA GPU and use the proprietary drivers, go to the NVIDIA X Server Settings, then OpenGL Settings and turn off 'Sync to VBlank' or you FPS will be capped to 60 FPS in all games.

Thanks for the links! I'll see what I can to to improve the PC Gaming Wiki. :)

Superuser (talk)07:41, 30 March 2013

Unfortunately I have an integrated Intel HD card, but it sounds like I'll be able to run it.

If you can find a list of all the console commands it would probably be a good idea to make a table for them.

Hi Nicereddy,

Thanks for all the work you've done on the wiki since you've started, I think you're beating us all for number of daily edits :).

If you need anything let me know!
