ii The Linux version is available as a downloadable installer only.
 +
ii To run the Linux port on modern systems it is recommended to use this bundle, it contains the native Linux port with the unofficial 451 patch applied. It will generally work with any version since it only requires the main files. The GOG Windows installer can be unpacked with the use of InnoExtract. For the Steam version, Wine is required to get the files, an alternative is Lutris. The second alternative is to use flibitijibibo's pack (Getting the extras is recommended for this).
 +
ii An OS X patch is also available for the Mac OS version, but only for PowerPC-based machines and it only reached beta status.
 +
ii Not available for sale in Germany.

ii The Rocket Arena and ChaosUT mods are only available in the retail GOTY releases and are absent from digital versions.

Graphical Tweaks
+
Increase system memory for game
The vast majority of graphical tweaks are accomplished by editing the game's .ini configuration files.

# Go to the configuration file location.
D3D9/D3D10/OpenGL/High Res/Widescreen Fix
+
# Open UnrealTournament.ini.
Installing the Direct3D 10 renderer allows you to play the game in high-resolution, widescreen, and Direct3D 10. There's also a Direct3D 11 renderer (currently no significant changes from D3D10 renderer), D3D9 and OpenGL renderers. Be warned that when playing online you may be kicked from servers using anti-cheat plugins.
+
# Find the line <code>CacheSizeMegs</code>, set it to higher values like <code>64</code> or <code>128</code>.

+
# Save and exit the text editor.
High Resolution Textures
+
}}
Replace the original textures with S3TC Textures and get amazing detail. Do not use these server-side.

Easy Mode
+
Graphical tweaks
flibitijibibo has taken the liberty of making an unofficial installer that automates the process seen below. If you own the game, download the installer here: http://www.flibitijibibo.com/fedora/installers/flibitUT436.tar.gz
+
The vast majority of graphical tweaks are accomplished by editing the game's .ini configuration files.

Hard Mode
+
High resolution textures
Step 1: Downloads
+
Replace the original textures with HD Textures and get amazing detail. Also use HD skins to improve character details. Do not use these server-side.
1. Steam

2. The Loki installer (links are at the bottom): http://www.lokigames.com/products/ut/updates.php3
+
Mods
 +
Various modifications, custom content such as characters, maps, mutators, and total-conversion mods can be downloaded and installed for Unreal Tournament.
 +
* A nice collection of mods at Mod DB

Step 2: Moving the Steam Stuff
+
Maps
Let's assume we are in the UT folder in steamapps (typically ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steamapps/common/unreal\ tournament/). Let's also assume that we are installing our game in ~/Games/UT/. Here are the commands that you should enter:
+
Maps are custom levels that are created using mod tools or editors.
mv Help/ ~/Games/UT/Help/
+
* Over 23,000 maps are found at Unreal Archive
mv Maps/ ~/Games/UT/Maps/

mv Music/ ~/Games/UT/Music/

mv Sounds/ ~/Games/UT/Sounds/

mkdir ~/Games/UT/System/

mv System/*.u ~/Games/UT/System/

mv System/*.int ~/Games/UT/System/

mv Textures/ ~/Games/UT/Textures/

mv Web/ ~/Games/UT/Web/

At this point you should be able to delete UT from Steam without any problems.

Step 3: Unpacking the Loki Installer
What makes UT difficult to install (and likely why you're here) is that the installer requires the CDs to run. Luckily the installer can be passed some arguments to unpack it so that we can manipulate what the installer actually copies to the UT installation. Assuming the installer is in ~/Games/Installers/:

<pre>sh unreal.tournament_436-multilanguage.goty.run --noexec --target unpacked</pre>

The resulting folder "unpacked/" should contain the installer's packages!

Step 4: Moving the Loki Stuff
The first thing we do is unpack (tar xvfz) the following packages:

* Credits.tar.gz - Will unpack to a Textures/ folder

* data.tar.gz - Will unpack to a System/ folder

* NetGamesUSA.com.tar.gz - Will unpack to a NetGamesUSA.com/ folder

* OpenGL.ini.tar.gz - Will unpack to a System/ folder

* UT436-OpenGLDrv-Linux-090602.tar.gz - Will unpack to a System/ folder

Due to most of these unpacking to System/, I suggest doing these moves one at a time...

For the following sets of moves we are assuming that the Steam UT copy is in ~/Games/UT/ and this unpacked installer is in ~/Games/Installers/unpacked/. We are currently in the latter folder.

Non-package Moves
mv ut.xpm ~/Games/UT/

mv README.Loki ~/Games/UT/

mv bin/ut ~/Games/UT/

mv bin/Linux/x86/ucc ~/Games/UT/

Credits.tar.gz
mv Textures/credits.utx ~/Games/UT/Textures/

data.tar.gz
rm System/UnrealTournament.ini.PATCH

mv System/* ~/Games/UT/System/

NetGamesUSA.com.tar.gz
mv NetGamesUSA.com/ ~/Games/UT/

OpenGL.ini.tar.gz
mv System/UnrealTournament.ini ~/Games/UT/System/

UT436-OpenGLDrv-Linux-090602.tar.gz
mv System/OpenGLDrv.so ~/Games/UT/System/

Running the Game
To run the game, just run "ut" in the root of the installation folder.

Unreal Editor
There is no Linux version of the Unreal Editor. However, there is a native version of the UCC. To run that, run "ucc" in the root of the installation folder.

Getting Audio with ALSA/PulseAudio
The game uses OSS for the audio output. Therefore, if you use ALSA/PulseAudio, the game will not have audio. To fix this, install either alsa-oss.i686 or pulseaudio-utils.i686 (or your distro's equivalent). It must be the 32-bit version!

Then you can run the game with ALSA/PulseAudio's OSS wrappers. For PulseAudio, run...

padsp ./ut

For ALSA...

aoss ./ut

If you are on ALSA but are using a 64-bit OS, run...

aoss -32 ./ut

If should be noted that these wrappers result in a HUGE amount of latency (we're talking up to half a second of lag). If you are aware of any solutions to this issue, please include it here.

Alternatively you can also install OSS Proxy Daemon. OSS Proxy Daemon is a Linux userland OSS sound device (/dev/[a]dsp and /dev/mixer) implementation using CUSE. Currently it supports forwarding OSS sound streams to PulseAudio and ALSA.

sudo apt-get install osspd

One possible fix for audio latency is to change the AudioDevice in UnrealTournament.ini.

Change

AudioDevice=ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem

to

AudioDevice=Audio.GenericAudioSubsystem

The Linux version is available as a downloadable installer only.
To run the Linux port on modern systems it is recommended to use this bundle, it contains the native Linux port with the unofficial 451 patch applied.
An OS X patch is also available for the Mac OS version, but only for PowerPC-based machines and it only reached beta status.
Not available for sale in Germany.
The Rocket Arena and ChaosUT mods are only available in the retail GOTY releases and are absent from digital versions.

Full controller support
You have to edit the User.ini and UnrealTournament.ini to activate the right stick.

In user.ini find the line "JoyZ=" and modify it with "JoyZ=Axis aLookUp speed=-0.2". Find "JoyR=" and modify it to "JoyR=Axis aturn speed=0.5". In the UnrealTournament.ini find "DeadZoneRUV=False" and modify it to "DeadZoneRUV=True". You can configurate the sensitivity with the "speed" option. This worked on a TwinUsb Converter using a PS2 Controller. If axis are wrong because you have other controller, swap the "JoyZ=Axis aLookUp speed=-0.2" with the "JoyR=Axis aturn speed=0.5". Example: "JoyR=Axis aLookUp speed=-0.2" "JoyZ=Axis aturn speed=0.5"

To invert an axis put a minus before the number or delete it if there is a minus already there in the "speed=" setting
Controller remapping
Fully remapable in user.ini
Controller sensitivity
in user.ini change the "speed=" settings number in "JoyX=Axis astrafe speed=" "JoyY=Axis aBaseY speed=" "JoyZ=Axis aLookUp speed=" and JoyR=Axis aturn speed=". This is for contoller with two sticks like the PS2 joystick.
Controller Y-axis inversion
in user.ini put a minus before the number or delete it in "JoyY=Axis aBaseY speed=". Example: "JoyY=Axis aBaseY speed=-2"

Windows

Crash when starting

After the splash screen, the screen turns black and the game crashes.
Disable DirectSound[citation needed]
 1. Go to the configuration file(s) location.
 2. Open UnrealTournament.ini.
 3. Change UseDirectSound=True to UseDirectSound=False.
 4. Save and exit the text editor.

Can't install UMOD files

The .umod filetype isn't recognised by the computer.
UT99 Registry Fix[citation needed]
 1. Extract and run the downloaded file, install to any folder on your computer.
 2. Open the newly created shortcut.
 3. Set the path to your Unreal Tournament folder.
The Shortcut Method
 1. Navigate to <path-to-game>\System
 2. Create a shortcut to Setup.exe by right-clicking on it and selecting "Create Shortcut".
 3. Right-click on the newly created shortcut, then click "Properties"
 4. At the end of the target box add the text " install", without quotes but making sure to include the space. The new target should be "<path-to-game>\System\Setup.exe" install
 5. Click "Apply", then close the shortcut properties.
 6. Drag and drop the desired UMOD file onto the shortcut and follow the setup prompts to install the UMOD file.
 7. Optional - Rename the shortcut and/or move it to a more convenient location.

Restore 3D sound

Use OpenAL Soft[8]
 1. Download the ALAudio for Unreal Tournament, Windows Version, and copy its contents (not the folder) to <path-to-game>\System.
 2. Open UnrealTournament.ini and search for [ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem]. Replace everything under that section with the new settings at the bottom of the post here. Replace UseHRTF=Autodetect with UseHRTF=Enable.
 3. Follow the instructions on this guide. Set the period count to 2.
OpenAL Soft 1.20.0 or higher crashes on startup.

Brightness slider not working

Use DDrawCompat[9]
 1. Download DDrawCompat.
 2. Extract the contents from the .zip file into <path-to-game>\System

Low frame rate on Windows 10

Use DDrawCompat[10]
 1. Download DDrawCompat.
 2. Extract the contents from the .zip file into <path-to-game>\System

Linux

No sound

OpenAL created by Loki Software uses OSS by default.
General[citation needed]
The software is not updated frequently.

Install the osspd package (Some distros like ArchLinux refers the package as ossp) and enable/start the osspd/osspd.service service.

If using PulseAudio[citation needed]

Run the game with padsp command (it is included with main PulseAudio package, if not, look for pulseaudio-utils)

If using ALSA[citation needed]
 1. Install alsa-oss package
 2. Load the following kernel modules as root with modprobe command:
 • snd-seq-oss
 • snd-pcm-oss
 • snd-mixer-oss

Run the game with aoss -32 (On 32 bit system just use aoss)

Change the Audio Device[citation needed]
 1. Go to ~/.loki/ut/System
 2. Open UnrealTournament.ini
 3. Change AudioDevice=ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem to AudioDevice=Audio.GenericAudioSubsystem

Notes

Depending on the used installation method, also comment or uncomment one of the 3 audio devices.

The game runs too fast

This happens only on modern CPUs, post Pentium 4. Pick one of these fixes.
Apply Stéphan's Kochen OpenGLDrv based on Chris Donhal's enhanced OpenGL renderer and edit UnrealTournament.ini[11][12][13]
Provides new graphical settings
 1. Download OpenGLDrv.so from this page.
 2. Make a backup of the original OpenGLDrv.so file located in the ~/.loki/ut/System and replace it.
 3. Open UnrealTournament.ini located in ~/.loki/ut/System.

Under the [Engine.Engine], change the following lines accordingly:

GameRenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice
WindowedRenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice
RenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice

Under the [OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice] add:

FrameRateLimit=99

Then save the file.

Flood the CPU with the shell script[citation needed]
 1. Create a new text file and name it anything.
 2. Open and paste this script and save the file.
 3. Run chmod +x <name of the file> in Terminal.
 4. Start the script to play the game.

Issues joining the UTPG version of the server

Downgrade to 436 version of the game[citation needed]
