The ones I've uploaded are of higher quality (they use the .png format, which doesn't have any of the side effects of the .jpeg format such as pixelation).

And the controller layout screenshot I have are just to show where the controller button mappings can be changed. Default gamepad layout screenshots I find are useless, unless the option to switch between button map layouts are available.

It's your call if you want to keep those gamepad layout screenshots.

i know what are the side effects of a jpeg, but i think that once you use more than 90% of jpeg compression (and i did that with 98%) there shouldn't be really so much differences compared to png. i already compared compressed and uncompressed image.. and the difference wasn't noticeable

... i think that we should maybe ask somebody else opinion... let me check on irc..

Really?

Exactly why is this an issue? I've been replacing JPEG screenshots with PNG equivalents for quite a while now without complaints.

As I mentioned earlier, the screenshots I provide are of higher quality (i.e. lossless format, no artifacts). I only replace screenshots in the following situations:

  1. The screenshots are in a lossy format (i.e. JPEG)
  2. If the screenshots are lossless, then the images are outdated

Otherwise, there is no need to replace them.

Anyways, this issue has been discussed at length already (and a set of image guidelines was implemented recently). PNG is the preferred format to use.

There really is no issue at all. ThatOneReaper is following the recently set guidelines (although I believe that he did begin replacing lossy files with lossless some time ago) exactly as he can if he chooses to. If he was doing so in the opposite direction, one could be taking some issue, but in this case - discussing it is really not in any way productive.

However, one thing I would mention, for example in the case of Natural Selection 2, you could have uploaded the files on the same file name, keeping the file history in tact. If you desired to change their names, the files could have been moved as well. This is also mentioned in the new policy.

Thanks Soeb.

For Natural Selection 2, I did update the original file. The history is still intact and I just moved the file to match my naming style.

The problem is that even though they are lossless.. he replaced high quality 1080p jpg screenshots with 1650*1050 ones.
Just compare the images, and you'll see there's less information in the pictures.

Not to mention that I actually did this comparison, and while the previous 300KB jpgs loaded in instants, the 1.3MB pngs took nearly 10 seconds each.
Try to see the situation differently: what sounds better? A 8 bit WAV or a 24 bit .ogg?

And for the records, I couldn't spot any compression artificat in the lossy images. You see that lossy doesn't necessarily means crap.
