As far as I can tell the widescreen resolution section has nothing to do with widescreen. The game already 16:9 by default. In fact, there is no way to make the gameplay area anything but 16:9. The only thing the game lets you do is to either upscale it or downscale it while preserving the aspect ratio.
The only value in this section is informing the user how to set the resolution manually, which is why I renamed it to Low resolution fix before Soeb reverted those changes.
No, in essence it doesn't have much to do with widescreen, although the section is commonly used for all resolution related fixes. It's placement is also much clearer under video settings (to which it is related), than under issues.
In addition, the game functions better in low (sub 1280x720) resolutions when they are set in the configuration file entirely manually.
