Key points

Performance is fairly poor on modern operating systems, with multiple issues with the way that the game window is rendered and movie compatibility.
Fixes listed on this article make the game playable, but the experience is relatively unfriendly.

Best version

The GOG.com version is inarguably the best due to not having any DRM unlike the Steam version and being updated for Windows 7 compatibility and having a simple installation unlike the Retail version.

Retail

4 CD-ROMs, a 2 CD as well as a DVD re-release has been made.[1]

Steam And GOG.com

Both versions of the game have been patched for Windows 7 compatibility
Both require major tweaking in order to be user-friendly.

Essential improvements

Patch 1.61

All digital versions of the game already have this patch installed

The latest official patch available for the game, it adds an external configuration tool along with some bug fixes.

It can be found here.

Movie and graphics problems

The two listed fixes work for most people, but others have persistent problems and cannot get the game to work.

Crash at Police Station

On some graphics cards, the game will crash upon entering the Police Station.
Instructions
If you find the patch is unable to be installed (for example, with the GOG.com version of the game), you may be able to fix the crash by changing some options on the game's launcher. Turn off 3D acceleration, high quality models and set the game to 16 bit colour. You can then re-enable these after you get past that section of the game.

  1. 1.0 1.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/6310/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (6310) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
