Key points

The PC version adds improved flashlight lighting and the ability to save at any time during the game
Some pixelated shadows and depth-of-field.
FPS may fluctuate between 30 FPS and 60 FPS. There are no known solutions to this.
Only supports Dinput for controllers and default bindings are awkward. Controls should be adjusted.
14 of Heather's outfits in the PS2 version are removed.

Widescreen resolution

Instructions

Field of view (FOV)

Flawless Widescreen supports this game.

Note: The aspect ratio may need to be narrower. If the game appears too wide, go to Flawless Widescreen's program files, find the Silent Hill 3 plugin config, and change 1.33 to 1.2. If you receive a permission error, close Flawless Widescreen, drag the file to your desktop and edit it there, then drag it back in.

If, for some reason, Flawless Widescreen does not work, try FOV tool.

Issues fixed

Silent Hill 3 is usually considered the best PC port out of the Silent Hill PlayStation 2 releases.

  • Low resolution Depth of Field effect. Also, no options to crank it up or turn it off.
  • If using anti aliasing (MSAA, at least), Depth of Field effect becomes corrupted (halos around objects).
  • Rendering resolution (usually found under Inventory > Options > Configuration) is actually internal framebuffer resolution. Use it to match your display resolution.
  • By default, the game creates savegames in its own folder. This can cause issues for users with non-elevated privileges. The workaround is to change the default save location by modifying the registry.
