Essential improvements

Patches

  • The latest official patch 2.2 is available at soggi.org.
  • The latest unofficial patch 2.4 is also available at soggi.org.
Both the Steam and GOG.com versions already come pre-patched.

Peixoto's patch

  • Gets the installer working on 64-bit systems.
  • Forced resolution allows high resolution without shrinking the HUD\Menus.
  • Fixes bad performance on Windows 10.
  • Hides the window border on Windows 10.

Controller support
Supports joysticks out of the box, but is very basic. For details on better native support, go to <path-to-game>\Joystick and open a file called joystick.htm. Has not been tested with GOG.com version.

Issues fixed

Mouse cursor flickers through screen

Install DirectInput wrapper that hides mouse cursor
  1. Download dinput.zip from this GitHub comment.
  2. Copy dinput.dll to <path-to-game>.

Music doesn't play in-game

Patch AM18.DLL
  1. Open AM18.DLL with a hex editor such as HxD.
  2. Find the text dslite.dll (when finding dslite.dll, there should also be a dsound.dll somewhere nearby).
  3. Change dslite.dll to dsound.dll (when completing this step, two dsound.dll entries should appear around that area of the file).

Notes

Alternatively, download pre-patched file.

Cutscenes play too fast

Game logic is tied to frame rate. At over 60 FPS, mouse is jerky and cutscenes are too fast cutting off characters' voice lines. At extremely high frame rates, game runs inhumanly fast.
Limit the frame rate to 60 FPS[citation needed]
Set the refresh rate to 60 Hz

Game crash or hangs indefinitely on a small black window after launch

Use dgVoodoo 2 window behavior control[4]
  1. Setup the game to run through dgVoodoo 2: put D3DImm.dll and DDraw.dll from /MS/x86 folder of dgVoodoo 2 distribution into <path-to-game>; put dgVoodooCpl.exe there as well.
  2. Launch dgVoodooCpl.exe in <path-to-game>, go to DirectX tab and uncheck both options in Behavior group. Click OK.
  3. This will disable game's own control over window behavior which seem to result in a hangup on start on Windows 10 and 11.

Notes

The desired display resolution can also be forced with dgVoodoo 2 instead of using the game's own resolution options, which seem to be fairly limited. Make sure to setup the game to use a resolution with the same aspect ratio however – especially if using the widescreen patch.

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  2. 2.0 2.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/610860/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (610860) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
