Key points

Steam version DRM switched from Games for Windows - LIVE and SecuROM to Steam.
Has a bleak post-processing filter that some users may wish to remove[1] (see remove filter).
The owners of the retail version can use the LIVE key of their copy to activate the Steamworks version on their Steam account. Also, the LIVE version is still available for those owners of the Steam version, who miss the features removed during the transition to Steamworks or who use mods incompatible with the Steamworks version.
With Steam version update, DirectX 10 and Nvidia 3D Vision support removed[2] and introduced some minor bugs.[3]
When using keyboard/mouse controls, laser sights become a crosshair and there is no way to use laser sights. Use the Laser Sights Mod to fix.

Essential improvements

Patches

Unofficial Patch

A simple patch that fixes for region lock, give weapon to AI, versus bugs etc. Extract all files and copy into the game's root folder.
Keep in mind that this patch corrupts game's compatibility with Windows XP. It also works via NT.DLL, which can corrupt game's compatibility with future versions of Windows, as Microsoft have stated that they will possibly be dropping NT.DLL support in the future.

Modifications

Remove filter

300px
The filter is disabled on the bottom.
Only works with the DX9 executable.
Decreasing the in-game brightness is recommended to compensate for the lack of filter, correct the black levels, and ensure complete global saturation.
The filter doesn't remove the pink filter in the ending of Lost in Nightmares.

ENBSeries 1.3 - Extract all but 'effect' folder into root folder. Go into shaderinput folder and rename the file psh031923D9.txt to pshCBF350A4.txt.

  • For an additional color boost, download this and extract it to the root folder. Replace all files with it. Brightness should be normal. Don't Alt+Tab on fullscreen mode or it will crash.

Laser Sights Mod

Please refer to the enclosed README.txt when installing this mod.

This mod replaces the crosshair with laser sights when playing with the keyboard/mouse.[5]

Minimalist HUD

This mod removed the unnecessary names and dark circles around the health, freeing pixels to be used to show more of the game world.

A version compatible with the DualShock PlayStation button mod can be found at the end of the topic.

No control scheme pop-up

This removes the annoying "control scheme changed to controller" and "control scheme changed to mouse/keyboard" text pop-up when changing control schemes.

When trying to move/backup save games in the GFWL version, including the folder %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\XLive\ is essential. This folder needs to be restored back to the same location.

Remapping

When mapping a button which already is mapped to another function, a warning will show up, informing the player that the controls may not work properly. To solve this, just either unbind the other function or preferably just remap it to another unused button.

Splitscreen Mod

This mod enables splitscreen coop in the GFWL version, which was left hidden in the code of the game. While it is only playable with gamepads, it is possible to use a keyboard via PPJoy.[6][7] This mod is also included in the versus mod mentioned below, making this mod obsolete.[8]

Splitscreen is impossible in the Steam version because the code was removed. However, there is a way to revert to the GFWL version by following this instruction.

Issues fixed

Issues with Games for Windows - LIVE

See Games for Windows - LIVE Issues fixed.
As of Steamworks update, game does still require GFWL components to be installed so users are able to import their save game data and achievements, even though it isn't used with main game.
Launcher errors, such as res = 1, err = 0x0000007e and res = 1, err = 0x00000012, are GFWL related and is possibly linked that there's no GFWL related data found.[11] Game should still work normally,[12][13] but as window requires manual closing it breaks full controller compatibility and may get irritating.

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/21690/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (21690) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
