Videos/game crashing

Crashes and failure to load videos for the game, for the Windows 7 64-bit operating system, the best way to fix this would be to go to where the executable is. That is, in your Steam folder, and then right clicking the executable and then going to "Compatibility" tab and then set it to run on Windows XP and running as administrator. If you are running an AMD card make sure it's not version 12.8 or it will not run. If the game won't start but shows up in task manager, run the game in compatibility mode windows 95/windows me, then make sure you run the game from steam.

Mouse lag

Issues unresolved

The French Steam version of Max Payne has corrupted files, with the error message Invalid Data Read from R_memory File("part1_level1b"). Reports indicate issues with the files x_level1.ras, x_level2.ras, and x_level3.ras.[1]

No official patch has been released.

Other information

Developer Mode

Developer mode is required to use console commands.

To add a command line option for the game you need to create shortcut. Browse to the game's installation folder and right click on the MaxPayne.exe file. Choose 'Create Shortcut'. A shortcut icon should appear in the folder. Right click on the shortcut and choose properties. Select the shortcut tab. The command line parameters need to be entered at the end of the data in the 'Target' line. It should look like the line below:

"C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Max Payne 2\MaxPayne.exe" -developer

Punctuation and spacing is important. Move to the very end of the line and press Spacebar once then enter the desired command line parameter (including the hyphen)

Console commands

Parameter Description
-screenshot Enables the F10 key for taking screen shots. Screen shots are saved to the "screenshots" folder under your Max Payne installation folder.
-nodialog Skips the Max Payne startup dialog when loading the game (uses options previously set).
-skipstartup Skips the startup video.
-disable3dpreloads If the system runs out of texture memory while loading a level, this option may prevent the game from crashing due to a driver error.
-window Runs the game in a windowed mode, in the resolution selected from the Max Payne launch dialog. Not all 3d accelerators support running in a windowed mode.
-novidmemcheck Disables the video memory check at the start of the game.

Advanced Command Line Options

These should only be used by advanced users while developing mods.
Parameter Description
-developer Enables "developer mode", including console. Mostly useful for mod developers.
-developerkeys Enables special developer keys (requires -developer as well). Note: you can break the game flow using developer keys.
-showprogress shows extended loading information. -developer is required.
-profile Enables in-game profiler. Toggle profile with F11, and see console aliases for profiling options.

System requirements

Windows
Minimum Recommended
Operating system (OS) 2000, XP
Processor (CPU) 450 MHz AMD / Intel Processor

Notes

  1. File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/12140/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (12140) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
