Use with PC platforms

Windows

Windows Vista and later: "Plug and Play". The computer should automatically detect the controller/receiver and install the drivers. If you run into issues installing the drivers, following the instructions below labelled as "Windows XP" should work.
Windows XP: Install the Xbox 360 Accessories Software (the installer supports both wired and wireless controllers).

Xbox 360 controller manager

The Xbox360 controller for Windows are has a well-known limitation, namely you can't turn it off with the GUIDE button, except in Games for Windows Live games. This software solves that problem. Just start it, and it will detect when the GUIDE button is pressed, allowing you to turn off the controller with its action buttons from the opening dialog box.

OS X

Use the TattieBogle OS X Driver.

Linux

This controller is "Plug and Play" on most distributions of Linux.
Xboxdrv is an alternative to the stock driver and allows many configuration options.

Issues fixed

The Xbox Support website has multiple support pages on using the Xbox 360 Controller with Windows.

"Using the Xbox 360 controller for Windows"
"Troubleshoot your Xbox 360 controller for Windows"
"Set up your Xbox 360 controller for Windows"
"Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows"
"Configure your Xbox 360 controller for Windows"

No force feedback vibration in DirectInput games

Install Force Feedback Driver for XInput (for Windows 8 and later use the Windows 7 version). Some games will still not support vibration even with this installed.

Wireless Gaming Receiver randomly disconnects

The receiver doesn't work in a USB 3.0 or 1.1 port, only use it in a USB 2.0 port.

Broken Wireless Gaming Receiver

A very common issue where the Microsoft Wireless Receiver suddenly fails and stops working.
Instructions

Inaccurate d-pad

If you experience input errors from the d-pad, following this procedure might fix it.

Wireless Gaming Receiver not recognized

This is usually caused by using a knock-off receiver; the official Wireless Gaming Receiver is never sold separately.
