The first order of business is downloading the correct drivers from here: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/downloads. Once you have navigated to the website click on the gaming tab and finally the xbox 360 wireless controller for windows tab. Select the correct driver for your specific windows install the click on download below the select box. After the download has finished install the driver and reboot. After rebooting the computer plug in the wireless controller receiver. Wait for windows to finish installing the driver software. Click on your start button right click on the computer tab and then select manage. Click on Device Manager. Navigate to the unknown device with Device manager and right click on it. Then select update device software. Select "Let me pick from the list" and then scroll down to the Microsoft common controller for Windows class and click on it. Finally, select 2.1.0. This is the driver that will allow you to use the controller. Windows will prompt you asking to install the driver click yes. Your controller should now work with Windows.

Alternatively, download the Xbox360 Controller Emulator and copy all of the files into any game's directory where the executable file is located. Any game compatible with an Xbox360 controller will manage to run with this, and this works for other PC gaming controllers.

Removal of Headset Drivers If you get this message:

You have connected a Windows Live-enabled headset to your computer. 
If you want to use this headset to access Windows Live features: Download Windows Live Device Manager Now 
This enables you to use Windows Live-enabled devices to access your list of contacts and establish a video or voice call. 

Then there is no known way to remove it, but work arounds exist, such as:

1. Install the software. It doesn't seem to do anything than enable extra functionality for LIVE enabled headsets.
   • You can then run MSCONFIG and disable it from the startup tab.
2. Keep closing the window when you insert a USB device.
