There are a couple of open-source implementations of C&C existing. [http://openra.res0l.net/ OpenRA] is an implementation that is multiplatform. It has a completely reimagined interface, supports high resolutions and is most supported. However,it only has multiplayer and music has to be put separately into its Aplication Data folder. Another one is [http://www.adityaravishankar.com/projects/games/command-and-conquer/ C&C: Tiberian Dawn - HTML5] which uses HTML5 features to be playable in a browser. Because it is a work in progress, it doesn't have in-game options and it runs very slowly.

Improvements

Patch

Command & Conquer Gold: Project 1.06

Information This patch contains:
  • Support for newer Windows systems and Mac/Linux through emulation.
  • Online (provided by CnCNet) and LAN playability up to 6 players
  • High-resolution graphics
  • Missions from console versions and Covert Ops expansion.
  • Enormous number of fixes
Information Compatibility mode should be turned OFF.
Information It is not recommended to install CnCNet alone as most players use 1.06 version and the patch installs CnCNet anyway.

Video settings

Information These are video settings alongside the fan patch.

Borderless fullscreen windowed

Template:Fixbox/instructions

  1. Go to
    <gamedir>\ddraw.ini
  2. Set: windowed=true, width, height = equal to computer resolution, border=false
Information The resolution settings in ddraw only stretch the image; to set internal resolution you need to run CCConfig.

Vertical Sync (Vsync)

  1. Go to

  2. Set: opengl=true, vsync=true

Network Settings

In order to play the game online with CnCNet, you can choose two main options: Peer-to-Peer or tunneled mode. Generally, peer-to-peer is faster, but may need some network configuration. There are 2 options of doing this:

  1. Automatic setup by CnCNet tester with UPnP.
  2. Manual setup (instructions here)

Issues Fixed

Information If you have an issue, be sure to check FAQ or this thread first.

Information If you have a problem, be sure to also check:
  1. If you have installed the patch properly.
  2. If everything in the compatibility tab is unchecked (Right click shortcut -> Properties)
  3. If you have enabled "Back buffer in Video memory" and disabled "Allow hardware filled blits" in CCConfig
  4. If you may be able to run it using a different renderer or enabling/disabling "singlecpu" in ddraw.dll

Issues Unresolved

Mac/Linux emulation

Advantage This game usually performs well in Wine[1].
Information This is emulation for the fan-made executable, not for the ISOs or CDs.
Information This is a guide to emulation using PlayonLinux/PlayonMac and can be also set on Wine with same configuration.
  1. Download PlayonLinux or PlayonMac and install it.
  2. Open, click "Install" and then "Install a non-listed program" at the bottom.
  3. Choose "Install a program in a new virtual drive" and then check "Configure Wine" (Name of the virtual drive doesn't matter)
  4. Now you should see a dialog with a wine class, take note of the path where drive_c is located (it's only shown for a while); select "Emulate a virtual desktop" and configure the virtual desktop of your resolution or smaller for better performance.
  5. In the libraries tab, add ddraw.dll and thipx32.dll to override list, write them in the drop-down and click Add (one at a time).
  6. Select the executable, click Next and go through the installation process.
  7. Add shortcuts for C&C95.exe and cncnet.exe.
  8. Right click on C&C95.exe and click "Go to application directory"
  9. Open ddraw.ini and set width and height proportional to virtual desktop resolution, renderer to opengl if not already set and maxfps to 120.
  10. Have fun!

General Information

Open-source implementations

There are a couple of open-source implementations of C&C existing. OpenRA is an implementation that is multiplatform. It has a completely reimagined interface, supports high resolutions and is most supported. However, it only has multiplayer and music has to be put separately into its Aplication Data folder. Another one is C&C: Tiberian Dawn - HTML5 which uses HTML5 features to be playable in a browser. Because it is a work in progress, it doesn't have in-game options and it runs very slowly.

Multiple languages

C&C patch also supports multiple languages. They can be found lower in the Command & Conquer Gold: Project 1.06 website. Natively supported languages are English, German and French. There are additional language packs for British English, Spanish, Polish and (Brazilian) Portuguese.

Optional mods

Mods for this game are scarce, but there are some that are quite neat. Those include WinDOwS mod (DOS interface), German censoring mod (brings back the censor) and Star Wars mod which are already found on the fan-patch site.

There are also some total conversions of the game. There's a Tiberian Sun conversion The Dawn of the Tiberium Age which is online compatible and which has a completely different campaign than in the original game. Also, a Red Alert conversion called Red Dawn is available as well as General conversion called Tiberian Dawn Redux.

Maps

C&C has support for external maps, both multiplayer and singleplayer. Link for them is at the beginning of this article as well as at the patch fansite. There's even a map creator you can find here.
