Red Faction II is a singleplayer FPS game in the Red Faction series developed by Volition and published by THQ. The game features an enhanced version of the proprietary Geo-Mod destruction engine.

After its original PlayStation 2 release in late 2002, Red Faction II received a Windows port developed by Outrage Games that released on April 1, 2003.[1]

The game was released digitally via Steam on August 6, 2009, and later GOG.com on February 10, 2014.[2][3]

The PC version of Red Faction II lacks the split-screen multiplayer from the console versions.

Issues fixed

"Please insert the Red Faction II disc 1 into your CD-Rom drive"

Empty your disc drives[4]
If you have no optical drive at all, create an empty virtual CD drive.

Game uses the wrong monitor

The game may pick the wrong monitor on a multi-monitor setup when a multi-monitor resolution is not used in-game.
Change Adapter_number in rf2_config.ini[5]
  1. Go to the installation folder.
  2. Open rf2_config.ini.
  3. Set Adapter_number to 0.
  4. The game should now start on the correct monitor. Try different values if problems persist.

"At least 8MB of available video memory is required to run"

If running Red Faction II on a 64-bit system with more than 2GB of VRAM, the game may crash during launch.
Autopatcher[6]
  1. If you have the Steam version, download and install Missing Features Patch (Steam)
  2. If you have the retail (disc) version, first update game to retail version v1.01, then download and install Missing Features Patch (Non-Steam)
Ensure you're using the right patch for your version of the game. The Steam version will not work for the retail version of the game, and vice versa.

Script timing errors in cutscenes

Use d3d8to9 Wrapper[citation needed]
  1. Download [1] d3d8to9.
  2. Copy D3D8.DLL to the game install directory.
  3. Enable Vsync in the Launcher Options Game and Set monitor on 60hz

Notes

  1. 1.0 1.1 When running this game without elevated privileges (Run as administrator option), write operations against a location below %PROGRAMFILES%, %PROGRAMDATA%, or %WINDIR% might be redirected to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore on Windows Vista and later (more details).
  2. 2.0 2.1 File/folder structure within this directory reflects the path(s) listed for Windows and/or Steam game data (use Wine regedit to access Windows registry paths). Games with Steam Cloud support may store data in ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/20550/ in addition to or instead of this directory. The app ID (20550) may differ in some cases. Treat backslashes as forward slashes. See the glossary page for details.
